As per the title: What do you think of vehicles sprayed in 'bed liner' material?
Rather than spending maybe $6k or more on a full re-spray of an older vehicle, an alternative that I think looks rather cool (depending on color choice and which vehicle of course) is to go with the product originally used as 'bed liner'. Many now 'splatter' this product onto their project 4WD or even sedans etc. The cost of the material is approx. $1000 for enough bottles to do an entire vehicle. DIY result can be very good, since it is a much rougher finish than automotive paint. Surface prep is much quicker for this product than for painting. It is best to repair dents first, but it will hide some small imperfections. The product is 2-pack, mix the hardener into the main bottle before spraying. The product can be tinted to all sorts of colors, such as green, blue, grey etc. Here is a link with images of people's projects: https://www.bing.com/images/search?q...3D005C5CA2D803 Personally I think some of the blue ones looks coolest, followed by some of the green ones. I'm not so sure about grey or black, looks less stylish, or almost someone driving around in their primer.. I asked the guys at the local automotive paint shop about the product. I was told it's really easy to do DIY, and they had different types in stock, 'medium' and 'course' type. Cheers, |

Sounds like a fad that'll be short lived. Then you'd be up for stripping and proper respray costs when the novelty wears off

Um 2 things
A/ your not getting much of a respray for 6k B/ this is a personal thing that is more about your personal taste in finish than a cost saver

Ok, so the price for a full re-spray is perhaps more than $6k, maybe $8k. Imagine if you have a car worth $2k or 3k, but has a paint work that is in a sad state, sun faded etc, then most people wouldn't spend $8k on a paint job on that vehicle. Its value wouldn't increase above $5k even if it has had an $8k paint job. I wouldn't put this on a $20k vehicle, then as you describe, it would be a lot of hard work to get it off some time in the future. |

The brand name escapes me but you can buy that stuff as a tintable product so worlds your oyster there. I think you would be narrowing the market for prospective buyers but to each their own. What’s a wrap cost? Perhaps wrap it in whatever your heart desires the remove it down the track? Sorry, wraps aren’t my thing do I’m a total newbie on costs

Probably look better and is more durable having the vehicle vinyl wrapped, don't know about cost.
What I've heard, it seems to have a good bit of stone deflection built in to the surface. Franco, I had my old Transit motorhome painted by a professional painter by bush only, geeze it looked good.

i'm not convinced the bed liner will last more than 5 years in full sun, they go soft in the sun and can go hard in the cold
there is a youtube show called "project farm" he tests the ones you spray from a can the major cost for a respray is prep, if you prep a car you could get it sprayed for $3k or do it yourself for $1500, bedliner will still need hours of prep you could try boat paint that self levels and brush it on or roller it, takes forever to dry and will probably get full of bugs one of the cheapest and best paint jobs i have done was enamel from supercheap, it was 1l of signal orange and painted a bonnet, it was air dry so the orange peel flattened out and shine was great for about $20

Will probably void your insurance or you won't be able to get full comp - this will fall under their vehicle modification rules.
Wonder if it effects economy? That stuff is not the smoothest finish around.

But it's probably a good idea to let them know you painted and with what. They care more about your car being roadworthy and you making it more dangerous or breaching noise levels. I was wondering about fuel economy too, but more from a weight perspective. And does it actually create wind noise? I've not seen any complaints so far from people using it, they found it wasy easy to clean and prevented pinstripes from going bush. What the sun does to it over time would be my biggest concern. If it does start coming off, can you peel it off and start again or does it effectively trash your panels? |

Last time I was on the Mornington I saw a landscaper who had covered his entire BF ute in Astroturf.
Dead set legend, well played, etc! Best advertising you could get for that line of work, without signage. Also protects the ute really well.

Might make sense in a bushbasher that's just going to be scratched to hell. But defeats the purpose if you have to ruin the original paint by putting this stuff on anyway.

That's one cool feature of the new LR Defender, you can opt for 'satin paint' and you get a film of protection over the spray colour - it looks a bit like a hobbyist painting a dull coat - and if you scratch it up heaps, you just replace the protective coat. Maybe it's like a plastic film?
Very cool, used to hate the scratches I'd get around the front wheelarch on my old 60.
