TOM TOM CANT BE TRUSTED ., LIFETIME MAPS , MEANS just for a couple of years while they can be bothered . even tho my gps is on their ( non updatable list) the new update corrupted my gps and their service dept wont respond , the excuse that devices under 2gb cant utilise the updates anymore is baloney as the whole map take up 350 mb so 3/4 of it is empty ,making their reason fraudulent . so tom tom cant be trusted .
so i advise check the support list. and plug in your older unit for new windows software update " AT YOUR RISK" the software has a new update , then updating the map it constantly said , "SERVER ERROR TRY AGAIN LATER" i should have stopped there . but the tom site even states that the unit i was updating would still be supported. my other unit says my maps are 40 months old but all(99.999%) of perth is still just fine . so i swapped out a cracked screen (uncle googs for new street issues for gumtree pickups . so now i need to ad the previous maps back if anyone has them sent me a google drive link thanks https://www.tomtom.com/en_au/obsolete-products/ Edited- 7th March 2019 Nav2- J5/J6/LF/LG/M8/RZ/V7 Nav3 AH/AI/AR/BG/BH/BM/FA/FB/FP/SE/SI/SJ/SL/SM/SN/SP/SQ/SR list here https://www.pocketgpsworld.com/TomTo...ected-9480.php |

Hi,
I haven't owned TomTom devices, but I have had very similar things happen with both NavMan and Garmin. For me it has always been quite a project to attempt updating a GPS device, and it either takes multiple attempts, (as in at least 2-3 hours) of firmware update etc, or it doesn't work at all. Their definition of 'lifetime' isn't quite what you would expect until you read their small print. But you will probably find similar for the other makes. Generally you will find the lifespan for all hand held electronics is getting shorter. https://www.theguardian.com/environm...er-study-finds https://www.securis.com/how-planned-...mental-threat/ It looks like there is some hope of re-using the TomTom hardware for an alternative OS. Many of the later TomTom devices runs Linux, which allow you to load something else than the original OS on it. https://alternativeto.net/software/tomtom/ https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/TomTom https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1...mtoms-default/ If it is an older device it looks like it runs Windows CE. Cheers, |

'Lifetime maps' probably means 'lifetime of product'.
Which is probably 24 months after its released its obsolete and replaced. |

I quite often receive "special offer" discounts to 'upgrade' my current GPS units.
They don't realise due to their p*ss poor customer & product support, I have moved on & won't be returning. WAZE |

Correct
https://www.navman.com.au/free-monthly-map-updates It’s basically only as useful til the next unsupported software update.

I've got a Tomtom Go Professional 620 - it seems the heavy vehicle stuff isn't replaced as often as the regular car type GPS, still works for cars just has speed camera notifications and things like route mapping tools, rest stop locations and ability to enter vehicle dimensions and weights to avoid the Montague Street Bridge etc
Mind you its an unreliable turd that crashes, craps out on hot days if its sitting in the car powered up in the car park with an error message on the screen that you have to power cycle it a few times to get it to work again, sometimes doesn't charge, slow when trying to enter addresses etc. I figured a dedicated GPS would be better and more reliable than solutions that come with smart phones but they're under powered, expensive pieces of **** - the Honda of the electronics world Would have been better off saving $500 and spending a few bucks on a phone cradle to mount one of my phones to the windscreen for GPS duties. |

Tom Tom stopped updates about mid year 2019 for older GPS's due to being obsolete for new software & firmware updates, you will need to purchase new models for the latest software updates.
I guess a lot of people who never registered their tom Toms with email address were never notified. Cheers |

I have an eight year old Garmin, It can be updated as often as I want on my PC, takes less than 5 minutes, too easy! Given a new Garmin this xmas, it used the same app to register and update and took less than 10 mins. (I wish sinc 2 could that simple)

I used to have a base model Tom Tom - had a 3.5" screen (yes, they did come that small) and was all of $100 or there abouts when bought 'on special'.
This was before mobile internet was common and smart phones in everyone's hands. When I went to update the ONLY option was getting 4 updates for $79..... I emailed them and said I'm happy to buy 1 for $20, but not 4 for $79 that was a package of 4 updates provided over a year every 3 months. Put up with it till I transitioned to mobile navigation then never looked back. WAZE / Google Maps is free, as are the updates

Same here with a Garmin Drivesmart 60 and I've just now got a pop up advising updates are available for download which only takes minutes .
I can't see the point of in dash factory GPS as it either costs way too much to update or in many cases no updates are available. The Drivesmart is also voice activated so you can get directions whilst driving by just speaking a few words and an address or what you want etc. It's a no brainer. But you must register it with Garmin and updates are only for the life of while the unit remains current. |

I have the Tom Tom Go Live 820 TopGear edition (Sold in Australia in 2011 after the debarkle with BBC stopping employee endorsements in the UK) Maps and Live Traffic updates stopped about 18months ago for this model and they gave me a pretty good price to update to a later model (Which I did)
The Topgear edtion still recieves GPS fixes every now and then and it's still a fun little thing on a long trip - Jeremy Clarkson's voice telling you that you've "cocked up" when you miss a turn etc. A few things are interchangeable between the new and old so I could transfer them and sort of have a "new" Topgear edition but I don't think you can get Jeremy's voice anymore.

My first TomTom was the OneXL, they wanted like $129 to update the maps on that.
I then got a new one with the lifetime map upgrades... (do not rightly recall which one) But ever since we got our Hyundai Tucson 2017 with car play...have not used it since, just do all my navigating on Apple maps or google maps. They are much more up to date anyway.

A couple of years ago I bought an X GODY with Primo Nav ..I didn't really need it , just liked the idea of having some sort of Sat Nav in my XR6 . Was cheap too. From memory about $100 and it's the big screen one a bit like a mini tablet so it's easy to see .
I mounted it to the right of the instrument binnacle. In the time I've had it , it's never lost suction and fallen down like my old one in the AU does. That's a ASUS. I've hardly ever used it as an actual Nav to find places , just for speed and for where I actually am . I have never tried to upgrade it just in case I really do need it one day for what it's really meant for I guess . |

I have a tomtom go 50something that i use occaisionally. I updated as i had to go to from Adelaide to Dandenong thursday, home Friday, It worked so well for me , I havn't drove in Melbourne for 20 yrs, I reckon i hit 3 sets of lights all the way through to Dandenong. Without it i would have been dekcuf, So easy to move through the city. What i like is the speed shown on the tomtom, Speedo was miles out on the truck i was driving

I'm converted to maps on my iPhone. I've been conned by so many GPS companies.
The maps on the iPhone. 1. Are kept updated all the time. 2. Are free. 3. Work in tunnels (great in Sydney). 4. Seem to know the traffic conditions live & you can drive around known traffic jams. 5. It doesn't matter what car you're driving, you only need your phone. Dr Terry |

My Garmin is so old it's not on their website. the hardware doesn't work on Windows 10, and the software doesn't work on Windows XP, so it's a brick as far as updates are concerned. It might be time to buy a new one... but i'm too cheap to throw out a working device.

Throw in bin. Use google maps or even better Navmii. That app has speed limits.

Hey, wasn't the Jupiter 2's problems more about excess payload ...now who was that unintentional stow away and evil saboteur.....that wrecked the Astrogator....nothing Garmin in that baby...and I did have a crush on Judy.

Whenever I hear the name Tom Tom, it reminds me of the New World song,
Tom Tom turn around, don’t ever let me down..... |
