I am not so sure about modern Toyotas. A lot of recalls and I don't think the engineering is as good as it was 20 years ago.

I think this is a myth.

Plenty of Toyotas break down. Plenty of other marques go the journey.

100%. Toyota are reaping the rewards of building some reliable cars in the past, however these days they are simply cashing in on that reputation rather than adding to it. They are no better or worse than anyone else.

Its hard these days to buy a bad car, pretty much you just need to keep up maintenance and you're good to go.

The only dodgy stuff going on is going to be electrics - ie Euros.

Keep in mind the average lifespan of a car in Australia is just under 10 years.

He's an interesting summary of the benefits of reducing the age of the fleet on our roads:

https://www.aaa.asn.au/wp-content/up...t_Dec-2017.pdf

I'd say the 10 years old is the point where the Euros start giving you electrical dramas - not economical to repair.

Used to be the case with Hilux's, but not anymore. Gone backwards, especially with the new engine and it's injector and dfp issues.

Reliability numbers fron the mines show no difference between Ranger and Hilux. The Hilux is just a little quicker and cheaper to fix. For now.

Any idea on Elantra sales??

Corolla and Cerato have a sedan, yet i30 is hatch only with the sedan being called by a different name.

Makes no sense - wouldn't bragging rights alone be incentive enough to call the Elantra an i30 sedan??
Well..... what do you know

Quote:
Hyundai reveals new small sedan, to at last adopt the 'i30' name in Australia to take the fight to Toyota's Corolla range.

Hyundai has unveiled its new-generation Elantra sedan, due in Australia later this year as the 2020 Hyundai i30 Sedan.

Market observers have long held the i30 badge could top Corolla sales in Australia if it had the same advantage enjoyed by the small Toyota and others: five-door hatch and four-door sedan wearing the same badge.

Now, after generations apart, the two will come together in the second half of 2020 – albeit with distinctly different looks (despite the newly facelifted i30's makeover).

In some ways, this locally rebranded Elantra replacement fills a space that could have been occupied by the i30 Fastback if it had been made available here below the N tier – but that model, despite its coupe-sedan look, is also a 'liftback' hatch offering.......

Man that i30 is hiddeous. Cars overstyled to appeal to americans like this one usually tank outside the US. It deserves to, looking that ridiculous.

Read yesterday that they are actually 2 completely different cars, and share very little between them.

Hyundies is just taking the urine at this point.

Following that example Ford should just call the Everest the Ranger wagon and instantly go to no1 in sales. And those 2 share a hell of a lot of parts and are at least on the same platform, unlike the i30 hatch and sedan.
