A little surprised that there isn't already a thread for this very sad news.
I wake up to the local ABC radio station each morning as they cross to the RAAF Base BoM guys for a pretty comprehensive local weather forecast. This morning, Jump by Van Halen was playing. Thought to myself, wow times have changed, Van Halen on the local ABC radio station! Then the announcer came on to say that Eddie had passed away overnight from cancer at the age of 65. Whilst I wasn't a huge fan of Eddie's style, there is no doubt the man had a huge amount of talent and I loved the band's music. Eddie is often lauded as the man that introduced the tapping technique to popular music. Rest In Peace, Eddie. The music world is mourning your loss. May you forever be shredding and jumping wherever you are.

Too young frankly and the man was a talented muso who should be remembered for more than 'Jump' even though it is the song he is most associated with.

I was on a Contiki tour of USA west coast in 1986. When we arrived in Las Vegas the tour guide informed us there were still tickets avaliable to a concert at the stadium that night.
My first stadium concert Van Halen supported by Bachman–Turner Overdrive. Amazing show, got to see Eddie doing all his tricks live and forgave Sammy Hager for replacing David Lee Roth. RIP Eddie

A few years back there were rumours Van Halen were coming to Australia to tour - I was excited, I'm finally gonna see them play - then it was cancelled.
Never did get the chance. That first VH album is a classic. I know 1984 was the big one for them, but I thought they never bettered their debut. Well done Eddie, you definitely left your mark. |

Sad news indeed. I remember years ago the band travelled to Mount Arapiles in Victoria and hired local climbers to do some rock climbing. David Lee Roth was into climbing but he was much better as a muso than a rock climber....
The band was also into jet skis, and there are stories circulating about Eddie modifying his engines big time to produce big power. So the boys liked adrenalin fixes- and it comes across in some of their music- Panama....etc Apple play this afternoon home in the ST- essentials Van Halen- Panama.... Just as well I am not driving my FGX beast when I do this.

Awesome FGX5.0, Women and Children First is their second best album for me.
It was only a month or so agoa I saw that Eddie was selling off some of his car collection.'There was a pretty wild Chev Nova in the listing. |

Can't say I have noticed it though. |

The revving is pretty clear in there, but never knew what car it was from. (its in the middle section with DLR talking) Years ago I was part of a session that covered this VH song - we overdubbed a recording of a Camaro I had |

The engine noise was from Eddie revving up his Lamborghini, with microphones used near the tailpipes. Here's the recording https://youtu.be/KNhOk4ILpv4?t=466

RIP Eddie,
Best Van Halen clip IMO. The formation landing at the end, brilliant.

5150 was the first album I was introduced to of Van Halen's and so I have a bit of a soft spot for that album and love that song. Every time i hear that, I have visions of Skyhawks! Pity they never featured Fat Albert in that vid tho. One of my favourite memories from working in Defence was when some Skyhawks from the RNZAF visited our base. I was fortunate enough to be able to witness them dropping bombs out at the bombing range at Dutson, and then standing on the control tower a mere couple of hundred meters away from the firing line as they came in and did strafing runs. Whilst the Skyhawk is not exactly a massive weapon, it was still an experience that I won't ever forget. It was not long after that they retired the Skyhawks from service. Anyway, back on topic; still continuing to work my way through the VH discography: starting with 1984 this morning. Damn meetings are getting in the way tho
