There are some dreamers with this model shape and the previous one with pricing.

The S550's are coming in the very low 40k range for the gen1's and even though they are the first of the bunch they are a much better package.

I note that Shannons is yet to reply to a simple email sent yesterday asking to clarify modifications...

Will call them Monday and tell them I'm recording the call before I start talking. I'm wondering has that bonnet been cut up to fit that bulge?

I should have bid then asked for insurance after the sale like the Shannons insurance representative suggested? I'm sure they record their own calls.. would have been interesting to see what they say considering I'm following the advice of their own staff.

You're probably right as it is being sold in Mexico where there are some PITA rules

However, it was currently registered so surely it shouldn't have been difficult to get a simple follow up roadworthy as selling it registered would up the bids considerably especially for someone in Vic.

I've been buying Off & dealing with Auctions Houses for over 30 yrs. & it's pretty much Standard procedure for them to remove (& surrender) the Plates after the Auction. Particularly If the Buyer is Interstate..

Saves them from getting caught up In Transfer disputes unpaid parking fines ECT..

That part doesn't suprise me, the rep on the phone being a complete muppet did. Wouldn't be suprised if everything they said about bidding then backing out after was BS too.
Probably is legit but I guess the reps are there to flog insurance and not answer concerns LOL.
Anyway, if still interested bid low, I've looked through a ton of car auctions that aren't 'the big ones' on shannons and they usually sell very low. Perhaps it's the reps or stuff like you experienced that have put most bidders off in the past?
chuck 13k on it, might be lucky ;-) Everyone else might have had similar concerns, called them and got the same rep chastising them to scare them off. I've always wondered why the bmws, mercs and mazdas I was interested in 2019/2020 sold so low in shannons auctions - probably their attitude pushed serious bidders away.

Just stumbled across this thread and I must admit that I was stupid enough to call Shannons as I’m getting a new ute. After the best part of 30 minutes on the phone, the call was abruptly ended as they have strict conditions on vehicles of this value, so he says, and they will not offer insurance for this type of vehicle unless it’s locked in a garage overnight, blah blah.

Then I remembered how difficult they were to deal with when I got my Trans Am. Moral of the story is that I went elsewhere and got a better deal.

Yes, the person I spoke to kept trying to be clever with me about the garage situation in the hope I would say something that would give her an "I told you so" moment in regards to getting cover.

She was literally doing all she could to not want me to get cover with Shannons.

Telling me a quote amounted to fraud?? What the hell?

I was thinking about it today actually. At a minimum I will be writing a letter if complaint to Shannons about the phone manner of the person, no one in a sales position should be berating an existing customer and making it near impossible for them to provide more business to that company.

I've contact a few other insurance companies that were happy to answer my request for a simple quote quickly and professionally.

The next question will be for them to quote my other car that has been with Shannons for several years.

It may be the only way they will learn to treat customers better....

Like I said - I will be following up the incident with Shannons. The person I had to deal with had no business working in insurance sales. They did everything opposite to what a salesperson needs to do.

I should not have had to ask for a supervisor to get given what's called an 'anonymous quote' then be spoken to in a condescending way repeating the same 'this quote means nothing' reminder after every bloody question.

That was the entire gist of the call.

I was told I'm conducting insurance fraud by asking for a quote.

I was told to bid, win, then call to get a quote because I then knew the purchase price.

If I didn't like the price I can just pull out of the auction afterwards.

That... coming from a Shannons insurance salesperson.

Yeah, but they still need particulars of the vehicle otherwise how can the quote be accurate? After all, they say that they look after people who have unique cars. In my case, the ute I'm buying is brand new and I gave them a ball park figure of what I'm paying plus 10 grand for a few options. They only then said that they wouldn't insure it because their conditions state that it must be garaged at night, WTF. I had less drama getting a quote for my Mack Superliner.

It's not like I lost any sleep over it, just won't ever bother calling them again.

I'm over everyone employing jumped up monkeys reading from a script - the whole advantage in employing humans is they have the ability to make judgement calls and use initiative.

If they're not going to use the two things that are unique to humans then replace them with online quote forms if everything is going to be so fixed and rigid.

I've a bit of experience dealing with vehicle auctions.

The auctioneers always appear as dodgy as **** because they are trying to avoid liability under your state's Motor Trade legislation.
Auctioneers ALWAYS try to claim that they are only ever acting on behalf of an actual vendor. If you buy a house at auction that's very clear, standard, and understood. Unless they deliberately misrepresent the house somehow, it is a contract between you and the people selling the house. If you find it's rotten with termites, or illegal wiring, or bodies under the patio, that's between you and the previous owner.

Your state's Motor Trade legislation will call BS on that, otherwise every dodgy caryard would be doing it.

It's the reason they charge a separate premium. Their claim is that at most they would be liable to refund that premium, and the actual sale is between you and the previous owner.
Also why they sell them unregistered. If the car is a repo, they don't want the registration to ever record them as owner, so they will deregister it in the old owners name, hold it unregistered, and require you to apply to register it in your own name. (This seems to vary a bit from state to state, but it always comes back to them trying to avoid their legal obligations.)

In WA for example, the RAC claims that Vehicle Auctioneers (who are and must be licensed dealers) are acting as dealers and are therefore statutorially liable. The Auctioneers claim they're not, and to date the government has been too lazy to care.

Your biggest concern should be the inspection protocols in your state. In WA they are not a regular thing, but relicensing a car (even one licensed interstate) requires an inspection. It's gotten a BIT better since it was privatised, but before (like all bureaucrats) they saw it as their civic duty to obstruct any attempt at relicensing.

As for the red plate. Well the VINs match, and it does appear to be affixed to a yellow car. Just make sure you save copies of those photos.
It's probable that the white section was a bespoke computer printed label affixed to a mass-produced plate.
It's also possible that the smartphone automatically applied OCR, and enhanced both the VIN and the barcode.

PS: Are you only interested because it's yellow?

Anyway, it's at $52.5k now. Not paying that much.

I think it went to $42.5k as soon as the auction started.

Also, Shannons were being coy with the modifications. I asked a few follow up questions that were not properly addressed.

Good luck to the person that gets it. No paperwork, no history and no ability for me to inspect.

If it was a bargain, sure worth the gamble but with a day to go and a price well over prediction I'm not willing to take the risk.

Not great value at that price... they are a 15k USD vehicle at the end of the day, give or take. Thats 20k 'ossie' pesos.

Im not saying they should or would be 20k here, given conversion and the rest of it which always adds a premium, but mid 50's and into the 60's is getting up there.
