This from my Local Sun Community Paper.. A STEP CLOSER.Supercars boss here next month MOTORSPORT enthusiasts in North Queensland have been given the clearest indication yet that a round of the V8 Supercars series could take place in Townsville as early as next year.. V8 Supercars Australia Chairman, Tony Ccchrane, said he will visit the twin cities with state Minister for sport,Tom Barton, to have talks with Townsville Mayor, Tony Mooney, in about six weeks time. Mr Cochrane said V8 Supercars Aust needs the engineering design by May 30 before being able to proceed to the next stage of making a commited decision to hold a round in Townsville. He said as far as he was aware, the engineering design process is underway. We are very keen to see a race in far North Queensland. Townsville is a great location, Mr Cochrane said.." I will remain hopefull for a 2007 race in Townsville." What do you blokes think????

That would be absolutely brilliant if a round was added to North Queensland.
I just hope that no other rounds are removed to make this a possibility. I for one would def travel to Nth Qld to go see the race...

YES YES YES! I willing to drive from Cairns to watch the V8's, though it would be easier if they came to me! :

Given a street race will need lots of $$$ from the govt (they all do), the Qld govt has said they will only support it if the race at Ipswich/Qld Raceway is retained (given the $$ they put into that)

yeah thats typical QLD government thinking for you. if it dosn't happen in the Brissy- GC corridor they're not interested : this little town is only 5 hours drive to Townsville, 10 hours from Brissy. folks from here go to Willowbank and QLD raceway all the time, Townsville would be a snack. hell, folks go o/night to Townsville just to see an 80 minute game of footy. bring it on for the country folks to enjoy and if you Melbourne folks miss one because of it, then too bad, you've already got plenty : |

This sounds like a great opportunity for motorsport and for the folk of far North Queensland. Have any further details been made available at this stage. Does any one have knowledge of the location of the proposed circuit. It is a fantastic location and the people from that region certainly do support their sport. You only have to look at the crowd numbers for the Cowboys in the NRL and the Crocs in the NBL.

It is certainly a fair distance from me in Sydney but I would be prepared to travel to Townsville to see a street circuit race. I am curious where they will hold it. When I was last in Townsville some 3 years ago the beach area look fantastic, what a great backdrop that would be with Magnetic Island in the frame. However the streets along the beach front are somewhat narrow and would take substantial engineering work to make it suitable for a V8 Supercar event.
Any further info or any suggestions where one may find further details? |

My dear boy I would be torn between our friends Qantas or my dear old mate Richard Branson. Much as I love to drive, I would prefer to fly and spend my leisure time catching up with old friends and a quiet drink or two in preference to giving the NSW and QLD law enforcement officers the opportunity to dramatically improve the revenue for their respective states, so I am certain I will fly. I will leave the racing to the real experts, on the track!

I think it is a great idea.....
Alot of Southerners may think that Qld would then have more than one round and it isn't fair so I would like to say that From Gold Coast to Cairns is 2000km the same distance to Melbourne so a race up in North Qld is really like a race in another state and give more top end people access to the V8's. Any street race is also a good race. The atmosphere, crowd and more cannot be compared to a purpose built race facility for entertainment. |

and it gives those of us bottom end of QLD an extra reason to actually get off our backsides and travel up to that end of QLD : (I have been trying to get up there since moving here... 10 or so years ago :togo: )

From what I can gather, the circuit will include a 2.5km Semi-street circuit(whatever that means) the main straight will be on boundry st Railway estate, it will have the pits and other off street structures at Reid Park opposite the Civic Centre, where it goes from there is yet to be determined...
