Default The Aussie battery that charges 70 times faster than lithium-ion

The battery that charges 70 times faster than lithium-ion

Updated Aug 10, 2022 – 4.33pm, first published at 2.45pm

Brisbane-based Graphene Manufacturing Group believes it has found a solution to help replace lithium-ion batteries which charge 70 times faster, are longer-lasting and better for the environment.
While developers across the world are charging into what is expected to become a trillion-dollar battery market by 2050, GMG thinks it’s on a winner with its next-generation graphene aluminium-ion battery.

Lithium-ion batteries might be everywhere – used in everything from coin cell batteries, mobile phones to utility-scale batteries – but they require a range of rare metals which needs to be mined, creating a larger carbon footprint.
There has also been a string of bad headlines over the past few years about utility scale lithium-ion batteries overheating and causing fires, including at Victoria’s big battery last year.

GMG founder and managing director Craig Nicol – a former Shell executive – said it would be a “very bumpy ride” with the scale of batteries needed to decarbonise the world economy.

But he said he was confident their graphene aluminium-ion battery – which GMG claims can charge up to 70 times faster, with three times more battery life, than lithium-ion batteries – would be part of the solution.
“This technology was only developed a year ago and we are already making batteries. There is no other company in the world doing what we’re doing,” Mr Nicol told The Australian Financial Review.
“We have a near-to-zero emissions product, but there will be lots of different battery types to get to the next step. We need to use all these products to get to the other side.”

Through a top-secret production process, which breaks down natural gas into graphene powder, GMG is working on developing a pilot plant to start producing graphene-ion batteries by 2024.
Now that’s Aussie tech at its best

Sounds like being backed by Rio Tinto with a pilot plant to be built in Gladstone in the next two years.

You’re just a typical Aussie like me, we have lived with a belief structure that’s been set up by traditional car makers
and when something completely new comes along we wonder if it just a trick to get venture capital, like fusion.
This is just so radically different, maybe it’s like the orbital engine, not the answer but get people thinking differently.

The end of needing ICE won’t happen tomorrow or even five years from now but it’s happening…..
It would be ironic if Lithium is a dead end and graphene takes over as a more green and easier solution
than mining stuff that’s much more complex to recycle…

You are not wrong there, as someone who has lived offgrid for many years, using battery, solar, wind, hydro technology, I tend to be a little suspicious of any great new breakthroughs someone from a non alternatively living person sprukes until I see proof in the pudding.

There is and has been for many years guys like Peter Pedals, from Rainbow Power Company who live what they preach in all things battery powered including EV's, so I tend to believe if something can be done they're the guys who would be listening to.
I just feel this is conditioning for a fuel company and mining company to start cashing in on credits to experiment.

But we will see what happens with this, interesting comments under the YT vid Ivory posted.

Lets just hope that this technology doesn't end up being sold overseas (like all our good Tech). We can build and distribute from here in AUS.

Like most battery " breakthroughs " we will probably never hear of it again

Another bit of new technology the requires fossil energy for production. Fossil energy will be required for a long time for the manufacture and distribution of this new type of "green energy" from batteries to vehicles.

Absolutely, but it's a case of short-term pain for long-term gain. And the gain is two-fold. Firstly, electric motors dont produce CO2 during operation. Secondly, they are far more efficient, so even if you were generating the electricity needed to operate them from fossil fuels, you'd use far less than now. But it's doubtful we'll see CO2 emissions stabilise for at least 2-3 decades.

All the more reason we need to be doing something about CO2 capture now.

It would be ironic if natural gas was used to produce a material for green energy that can be recycled.

Lots of brilliant inventions have come from Aussies, let’s hope that this is one of them….

They have been quoted as saying that Gas is currently being used but the catalytic process to obtain the Graphene (Carbon) releases just Hydrogen (Gas: CH4) which they intend to sell or utilise in other energy generation.

That's what I was thinking. Hopefully the chinese don't step in and take it away.

So this is made from the stuff used in Pencils.. I recall doing an experiment with a pencil and lemon in school where we could store a charge

There is always the talk of new emerging battery tech from the pro EV crowd.
this one actually looks good, but is it good enough?

and is there a negative? Graphene is also very light
