Vehicle theft in NSW at highest point in six years

Quote:
Motor vehicle theft in NSW is at its highest point in six years due to a post COVID-19 crime 'bounce-back' and the promotion of theft over social media platforms such as TikTok.

As with many other property crimes, vehicle theft has fallen dramatically over the past two decades.

Executive Director of the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research Jackie Fitzgerald said the recent jump in vehicle theft can be attributed to a 'bounce-back' from the COVID-driven crime declines of 2020 and 2021 as pandemic restrictions eased.

"Another factor, however, may be young people being spurred on by social media posts encouraging vehicle thefts on TikTok," she said.

The research report cited a number of media reports, trending social media hashtags and police officials noting the trend.

Examples included a video uploaded on TikTok with hashtags #creepingwhileyouresleeping; #lockitorloseit; #pursuit appearing to show young people joyriding at speeds of up to 200km/h in Dubbo NSW.

Another observed hashtag #KiaChallenge was also thought to be promoting the trend where videos appearing on TikTok and other social media channels appeared to show how to steal cars that had been manufactured without push button ignitions and immobilising anti-theft devices.

Good that not many trucks are being stolen.

I still use one of those wheel locks on my old ute, plus its a manual so its theft proof. Around here though the trend is breaking into the house and bashing the elderly if they don't give the keys up.

Jumper leads obvious and freshly placed in the front passenger footwell. It leads to a certain impression. (Which is actually wrong!)

Waiting for the #roadranger TikTok theft challenge!

Thieves would be like, look at that copper cable just sitting there or are they smart enough to work that out.

This deterrent is very effective if used as it was intended ............ to beat miscreant car thieves about the head and on arms and legs, before police arrive to continue justice.

Don't get too cocky, these days this attitude might earn you a stabbing since most thieves these days are numerous in groups who don't have values for life as we know of it.

I should have used past tense in that post. I was reminiscing on how problems were solved in a simplistic world of the good olde days.

These days the poor unfortunates without personal transport would likely be given counselling, after the stolen vehicle is discovered burned out, asked not to continue their anti-social behaviour, then dropped back at whatever address they gave the police by a taxi with the fare picked up by the taxpayer.

I will probably now be accused of not understanding the pressures of being a disadvantaged person in these 'troublous' times.

I seriously question the merit of allowing an app like TikTok. Perhaps it could be removed from Google and Apple’s app stores?
