Default What's The Best Battery for My 2019 Focus SA Active - Auto?

While the battery in my 2019 Focus SA Active is still going strong, it almost 6 years old. I assume it could die any time after 6 years of age?

Does anyone know the best replacement battery for this car?

Cheers
Dave

Can you have it load tested at a Battery World? That’s usually a free service and should give you an idea of where you’re pointed.

Sometimes the OEM batteries from Jefferson Ford are actually best value for replacement.

I usually wait for my battery to die, then use the second car to do a dash to supercheap or similar outlet.

I was thinking a brand like Century or Super Charge, but open to a recommendation.

Citing a favourite brand can be a risk, someone else lobs in with “I had one of them and it caused my car to <insert random event of choice>”…

My two most inconvenient experiences were with SSB batteries, the negative posts were hollow/porous and let acid vapour destroy the negative terminal clamp. However I still use the brand. I also have Century, AC Delco and Club Assist batteries in service. A good Lion was stolen out of one car, they are a Melbourne based brand but again, Korean quality.

After a bit of research on FF it appears that this car is going to let me know when the battery is on its way out (clever little car - recent purchase for us - still learning). So I guess I will worry about it then.

PS - You know your having a bad day when someone knocks off your car battery!

Mine has date stamp of 5019 which means week 50 of 2019, still going strong, start-stop function works great.
I have a jump-starter stored in the spare wheel well just in case and will probably think about replacing the battery after I need to use that (I've actually used it 3 times to help other stranded people so I know it works).

I ended up going with a SuperCharge - MF66HEF.

Fit perfectly, and looks the goods. Everything is working perfectly now.

I put the multimeter on it and the volts were 14.3 with the car running, so alternator is good. Although, I did notice that when the air-con was on, there was no charge going into the battery at all? We run our air-con all the time. This together with all short trips means that we almost never are putting a good charge back in the battery. Perhaps I should put it on the charger every 6 months?

PS - By the way, no the car did not give me any warning that the battery was on its way out. Just completely dead one morning. Having said that, I now realise there were subtle clues, like the start/stop function not working (for 2 years?), and this weird thing (shudder feeling) with the brake when starting, but only every 15 or 20 starts.

Did you use a current clamp to check there was no charge going into the battery?

If it reached ~80% then the car will stop charging it and the power will be drawn from the alternator.

I just had the multi meter on the battery terminal clamps?

Most modern cars, especially those with start/stop function, will have an on board bms (battery management system) as well as variable voltage alternator (commonly called smart alternator).

Rarely will they charge the battery until it's full. It's just the way the system has been designed.

I've replaced my Ford batteries with OEM for many years now. They are exide I believe (stickered as motorcraft) and very competitively priced in my experience.

If the voltage didn’t change on the battery after turning on the AirCon then the BMS has decided the battery is at the desired voltage already.

Power = Voltage x Current. The voltage may be 14V at the battery but if the current is close to 0 then the battery isn’t being charged. You can’t just measure the voltage alone. Current is the “juice” going to/from the battery so measuring using a current clamp gives you a better picture.

Anyway, I wouldn’t worry. Ford has been using BMS systems for at least a decade and they do a good job in my experience. I’ve got 5.27 years so far, out of my factory battery and nearly done 60,000 most of which were 20 minute trips.
