Just a quick one...
If I put an XR6 ECU into my Fairmont, do I need to change the BEM aswell? And if I change it do I lose Fairmont options ie; climate control etc? How does it all work? Krissy

I just had a c### of a time changing over my ecu as it wasnt co-ordinating itself properly with the BEM, changed over the BEM but the wiring loom was different too so the whole dash had to be pulled out. that was from a forte to an XR6, I dont know if it would be the same going from fairmont to XR6, but if you do change the BEM, you'll loose your options too.
If your new ECU works fine with the old BEM you get to keep your options.

Krissy - whay would you want to do that? I can't see any benefit at all - would be easier and cheaper to get the edit done, in which case you will get more performance than either of the stock ECUs.

the tickford is slightly more adjustable in its engine configuarion (ie u have more options to play with). the biggest improvement over a stock ecu is the variable transmission controller.
having said that there were a few diff between S1 and S2/3 wiring which may cause headaches when interchanging, which may have happened to you robbo. AFAK within the same series interchanges should be possible no trouble, but then again we all know the little tricks ford has played on us over the years with not being true in using series specific parts. An actual easier solution to this dilemma is getting ur own ecu reprogrammed to tickford spec, that way u can be sure that the right program can be loaded (it goes by ecu number)
