fuel price calibration

i'm not very good at math but.

if fuel was $1.00 a litre for $20 you would get 20 litres

at $2.00 a litre for $20 you would get 10 litres

$1.50 a litre for $20 you would get 15 litres

at $1.43 i only got 13 litres. should'nt i have got more than 15 litres. is there something i'm not working out properly. as i said i'm not very good at maths. am i doing my head in for nothing or are the petrol bowsers not calibrated properly

$20/$1.43 a litre = 13.99 litres

If you have a receipt, and got closer to 13 litres instead of 14, make a complaint. Perhaps do the same experiment at the same servo, and if the result is the same, lodge a formal complaint as it would appear they're profiteering.

20 / 1.43 = 13.98 litres

@ 1.50 a litre you will not get 1.5 litres
20 / 1.5 = 13.3

Also, some servo's advertise 1.43 but charge 1.439!

Shouldn't all the prices have to be rounded correctly or at least on the billboards?

I imagine there would be quite a few billboards not designed to go to three decimal places with a dollar as well. Designed for the days when we talked about our fuel in cents, not dollars.

I would assume the price listed on the bowser would need to be correct to three decimal places.

Consumer Law states that if a company has a product advertised for a certain price (say $1.00) and charges the customer more ($1.20) when they get to teh counter then the customer gets the item for free and any additional items for the lower price.

All servo operators are trained to know htis so they cant deny it if you catch them out.

Free tank of fuel anyone?

Not any consumer law in Australia that I am aware of. I do the pricing for a chain of 36 stores nationwide and we have the occasional case where a store hasn't replaced their old out of date POS tickets with updated pricing. In that case, they are required to sell it at that price or if the price is obviously incorrect, for example $20 on a $7000 bedroom suite, then withdraw the incorrect pricing from the item.
There is a "voluntary code of conduct" among supermarkets that allows for an item that is price lower on the shelf than it scans at the register to be given free but that is as far as it goes. It is not a consumer law.
