#1 brake rotors are not to be painted as the paint can hold heat in (subject to looking into it a bit further ) #2 brake calipers are not under any rules except for chrome plating chrome is a no no #3 min ground clearance is to be no less than 100mm at time of printing (this was from a book 12 weeks old ) he also mentioned that there are new laws coming through about the lowering of vehicles hope this helps josh jason

It's a minor isint it josh.??
I dont think VIC road's will even look at it. When i got my Major I got it re RWC'd took it to vic road's and they didnt even look at the car. I asked if they were going to look at it and they said na we dont have to:P So if your's is a minor I would imagine they wont bother looking at it. Am I right.?? |

Josh getting Stat-dec's signs will do less than nothing. Massive waste of time.
Police do not have to base a defect on actual defective items. This is fact. They are within their right to defect a car as it is driven out of a dealer. It is then up to the driver to prove otherwise and lift the defect notice. Hence why I hate to take the LTD out. No matter how roadworthy your car is, it can still get defected. And yes, disc rotors come standard painted!

Some places under the car must be 100mm minimum, but others can be as low as 93mm. Yes I know its only 7mm, but: a) That 7mm may be a pass or fail for some cars b) Obviously the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing when it comes to these laws. |

It's a bit weird the height rule. My Hyundai S-Coupe was 100% factory in every way apart from wheels, CD player and sunroof. Yet I can guarantee it didn't sit 100mm off the ground. I always struggled to get a normal hyd jack under it. I used to have to start with the factory jack for a bit then swap to the big jack. Best bit was the chassis was so rigid you only needed to jack one spot for both wheels on that side to be off the ground. I may have come under the 93mm rule?

Page 3, point 4 gives you the ground clearance calculation. 93mm is for a SWB. Your LTD and wagons will be 97mm. And before you start flaming me, remember I said some places. ;) |

I think the default 100mm must override this?? Lol, who knows.
I also see you guys have the "no more than 30%" lowering rule, which is what i was done for - measured by the eyebrow height....

Even then, the VSI pages can be a bit funny. Read the one on roadworthiness and it doesn't even mention anything about having a functioning handbrake. used: |

I have been a RWC tester for many years and believe me that aint a RW item. And the worst thing is that it aint the worst thing I've seen coppers pick on. What ya have to do know is to contact a vic roads inspector and then the superior of the officer involved and then they will more than likely be forced to sit the RWC course. I had 2 coppers in my class when I did it all those years ago. They got in trouble for picking up incorrect defect items on too many occasions.
Its a shit situation but its also a matter of educating these police men to have half an idea of what the regs are. |

well i got the canary removed, but i ended up stipping the paint off the brakes because the mechanic didnt get back to me and i had run out of time. and by the sounds of things they go by exactly whats on the sheet, eg they only checked my muffler for clearance, not any other part of the car. funny thing was i walked up to the counter and go "hey i need to get this defect cleared" and the lady behind the counter says "what a cal-i-pers and ro-tors?" LOL i laughed and just said they are your brakes

I think most of you are looking over the fact that in most circumstances, people get defected for either: driving stupidly, attracting attention, and in some cases, pure bad luck.
I'd assume the Officer knew that painted brakes aren't illegal, but he had to make the defect notice 'look' substancial...... clearly there was something he didnt like!!

with my minor they just checked the crap on the sheet. nothin else. good thing u got it cleared. its the major defects you have to worry about, requiring a full road worthy. |

The paint stripper you used on the rotor probably damaged the disc more than leaving the paint on ..

Are you going to take the risk and paint them up again?
I did my old ED's grey, and if you looked at them, they just look really clean, not painted... Not the best pic, but you get the idea...
