Exhaust Fumes extraction from a shed

Well, the wife and I are taking the plunge and buying our first home. It comes with a nice big shed which I can put the XE inside of instead of it being stored elsewhere on someone else's property.

Anyway, I was thinking about perhaps rigging up some sort of pipe that I could easily connect to the exhaust pipe of the car and the other end is outside the shed to save me from having to open the shed up to remove fumes when the car is running.
I was wondering if someone has something similar already (e.g. workshop, backyard enthusiast, etc) and what have you done?

Try the Hydroponic shops, they have heaps of equipment to extract heat & fumes from Hydro crops.

I think the bathroom exhaust fans from bunnings for $15 would be fine. Provided the attachment you hook up to your exhaust is sealed in at the end thats connected to the fan.

If and when it does go, it will be cheap to replace.

I was thinking more along the lines of just a simple extension to the exhaust pipe. The fumes would be pushed out by themselves. Good idea though and one worth thinking about as well.

It's in storage. Just want to run the engine every now and then. I know I could just open the shed to let the fumes out, but I guess I'm being lazy... :

doesnt matter if you open the shed. we had a big garage with a side single roller door and two rollerdoors on the front, and when we ran my dads xw in there, it would fume up like crazy. most car workshops have a hole where the cars exhaust points at when on a dyno

OK, I'm going to mine up my own thread.

Same situation is arriving. The last house fell through, thank to the vendor pulling it off of the market at the last minute, and we went overseas instead.
Anyway, new house is on the way, nice single car shed where the XE will be stored and work on the EL will be done. I still want to do the exhaust extraction thing. Anyone have any ideas?

I was thinking after reading this thread again that I could possible create a box of some sort with a hole on one side that you put the exhaust in to and it has a cheap exhaust fan on the other end which will blow the fumes out a pipe of some sort. Good idea?

I'll be ripping a sunlight out of the house as it's in a crap spot, so I could use the piping from that as the extraction pipe?

Another question I have is anyone know how hot the tip of the exhaust pipe gets? Could you put a rubber grommet over it or would it be too hot and melt the rubber?

it'll melt the grommit, they get pretty bloody hot your best idea is to get heatshield basically the same stuff they use for insulation and wrap that around then use a whole load of that and create a flexi tube to either go out the roof or just hang it outside the door.

just point the read end at the door and since you will probably have to open it to get inside you should be fine..

Flexible pipework connects the roof-mounted exhaust fan to the cars exhaust pipe. Expensive, but it more than does the job.

My Neighbour used a ceiling fan mounted on the wall.
He used it back when he could paint in there, also to extract smoke.
Works fine.

My current line of thinking is that there is a small, circular sun-light in the house which I'll be removing as it just looks ridiculous where it is. I can use the flexible piping from that from the exhaust pipe to either outside, or an exhaust fan which then goes outside.

As for those people that just said open the door, it doesn't work properly. If there is no wind to blow the fumes out of the shed, it's just going to keep accumulating in the shed until you pass out from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Not if the exhaust pipe faces the door. Every morning before my dad would go to work when I was little, he'd start the van (2.0 carb) 10 min before leaving to let it warm up. It was in the garage with the exhaust facing the garage door and the door was open. Guess what? It never fumed up in the garage! The fumes went straight out the door. Cheapest, easiest, best, smartest solution.

Well, in the current house, I've parked the car in the enclosed garage with the roller door up and you can easily smell the fumes throughout the garage, even with the exhaust pointing out the wide open door. Hence why I am looking for a better solution for the new shed.

I have just installed a solar powered ventilation fan in the roof of my shed.
They claim it can move (up to) 22 cubic metres of air per minute and will replace all the air in the shed every 40 minutes. It will run all day as long as there is some sunshine (or daylight).
I put it in to keep the shed cooler so the cars don't cook but it may work for your problem as well.
They reckon one of these equals (up to) 14 wind vents. (Love those up too's)
Cost was $700.00 installed just outside of Brisbane.

All you need to do is get some thin sheet metal, and make a cone that sits snugly over your exhaust pipes and then at the end of the cone attach some 2.5 or 3 inch hose and run it long enough to take it outside the doors of your shed, so it doesn't blow back in the shed, its pretty much just an extension of your exhaust pipe, and you don't need any extraction fans, it is pretty simple to make up.

What kind of door are we talking about? I'm talking about the big roller door the car drives in & out of... with the car's butt pointed at that and it open, the exhaust fumes go straight outside..
