Mondeo wins UK Car of the Year gong
Chris Gable | 25/07/2007
Ford's new mid-size car, due here soon, has been awarded top honours by motoring weekly, Auto Express.

Ford’s new Mondeo, due here in October, has been named Car of the Year by big-selling UK motoring weekly, Auto Express.

The Mondeo also picked up Best Family Car and Best Estate awards in the magazine’s annual New Car Honours.

And the magazine’s editor in chief, David Johns has gone so far as to say that the Mondeo is “Ford’s finest ever car”.

"Each and every model, whether hatchback, saloon or estate, has been designed and engineered to the highest standards,” he says. “The car oozes quality, especially in the cabin which has levels of equipment and comfort which sets new standards for the class."

At its Melbourne motor show preview in March, Ford Australia president Tom Gorman said that depending on the model selected, Mondeo will be available here in sedan or hatch body styles, with manual or automatic transmissions and one of three different trim levels.

"There are also three different engines which make up the range and I'm excited to confirm one of them is a sophisticated new 2.0-litre turbo-diesel," he said.

More details of Australian-spec Mondeos will be released closer to its Sydney motor show launch, Mr Gorman said. This year’s show opens on October 11 and ends on October 21.

Other Auto Express major winners in what must surely be the first car of the year awards of the year, if you get our drift, include:

Vauxhall Corsa - Best Supermini
Honda Civic - Best Compact Family Car, and Best Hot Hatch (for the Type R)
Citroen C4 Picasso - Best MPV
Kia - for its industry-leading seven-year warranty

Well, I have not long come back from visiting the UK and I can tell you that the new Mondeo is pretty damn good. The build quality is approaching that of Audi, and they have always had great ride and handling. Why anyone would buy a Holder Daewoo or even Toyota for that matter when they are released over here is beyond me. It's a shame they don't sell the S-Max and Galaxy here too.

Now, if FoA could couple the Mondeo's build quality along with already sound driving dynamics and performance in the next Falcon, I truely think it would be unbeatable.

No surprise there, the outgoing version won multiple COTY awards around the world.

I'm a skeptical about the Mondeo - I remember the last time they dumped them here, what a slug they were!

While the basic Ford Six was code named Barra, the Turbo version clearly deserved its very own moniker – again enter Gordon Barfield.
We asked him if the engine had actually been called “Seagull” and how that came about.
“Actually it was just call “Gull”, because I named it that. Because we knew it was going to poo on everything”.

If it's wheels then I'd place money on the Epica winning the comparo.

I think it was What Car Magazine in the UK, the Mondeo beat the BMW 3 series (can't remember which one). It was all over the front cover...
