There's not many tracks in Australia open to the public where you can wind it out to full speed - maybe Qld raceway, I suppose. Now that that's out the way, my AU2 Forte V8 was limited to 180km/h. As I understand it, all non-XR AUs have the same limit. XRs (sedans) have a 210 limit. You can get an edit/chip to remove the limiter, but what's the point? There's nowhere legally you can hit it except on a racetrack or a dyno (and dyno runs are not usually done in top gear).

AU XR's were an odd bunch. The utes were all 180kph limited due to the longer tailshaft. The sedans have had speed limiters noticed from 210kph right through to unlimited.

Mine was a 210kph limited model and, to be honest, I doubt I'd ever want to go that fast in it anyhow. That said, its no longer limited due to the edit tune in it anyhow.

as stated above unless you would like to have the tailshaft shreaded forget it. Also I know you wouldn't want to do this sort of speed on the road only a brain dead tool would, and tracks where you'd be able to do it are limited . If you do intend to race at those speeds you need a custom shaft and also most if not all tracks require a tailshaft brace to stop it hiting the ground if it lets go (if the front of the tailshaft hits the ground at speed you won't be with us long) . so there is really no point in removing the generous limit of 210 unless you are doing some serious track work and have deep pockets

yeah.. i remember hittign a touch over 200 in my old EA... then found out afterwards about tail shaft issues.... certainly kept me honest after that.... younger more stupid days them ones....

i beleive the 180 limit was introduced around the EAII to EB onwards... some models seem to have the limit.. some don't...

*cough* I remember heading to a certain ford show last year... Going down a really big hill, on a really long straight, 50km out of wagga..:evil3: ... remember that aust????

Found out later, it probably wasn't the best spot to try it either, :togo:

Anyway, back to the point. Foolishly I discovered mine does hit that last magic number on the speedo, and it still wanted to keep going. AFAIK, limiters on them seemed to be a bit of a hit and miss thing. My parents old 98' AU XR6, I believe was limited to 200

Speak to data_mine about inferior tailshafts and what they can do when the limiter is removed.

Lucky he was on a dyno at the time and not on a track.

Yep, and I bought the aftermath. Even after a clean up, the floor was a bit of a mess.

the xr8 on youtube that does 240km/h sounds like a stock car.

Read somewhere that the series 1 XR's do not have a limiter.
Never noticed one on my VCT and I've been past 190 (woop woop NSW) with no probs at all.

The 180 km/h limit was there to protect the tailshafts of the non XR/T AU's which didn't have the alloy tailshaft.

That footage on youtube was recorded aboard a stock XR8 220.

I doubt your AUII XR6 has a limiter. If I was doing that sort of speed on the ground I'd rather be in something that's got wings on it and either be airborne, or getting pretty close to pulling the yoke back - certainly not in my XR.

My AU series 1 Fairmont Ghia is limited to ~190, it came factory fitted with the tickford VCT 6 and a single piece alloy tail shaft so I was surprised to find the limit just before 190

You are extremly lucky that vibration was the tailshaft and much longer and we would be reading about it in the obtuaries instead of here. and maybe the darwin awards of course

The lane isn't limited to 220ish as far as i can tell, gotta love big properties and private roads. No vibrations etc. No probs at all except that floaty feeling of a semi-flying lane at full tilt. Stupid, yes. Insanely exhilarating, yes. Do it again, never.
