That's crap they should at least have to do some sort of community service. They're endangering hundreds of people and their possesions and they don't even get a slap on the wrist.

I know they're only 12 but it doesn't seem fair

Agreed... you can't lock 'em up obviously - but a couple of hundred hours of community service would probably do them good and make them (and others) realise there are consequences to their actions.

At that age my parents knew where I was, who I was with and what I was doing 24/7.
If I did anything wrong, I was punished, and was taught that there were consequences to my actions.
It taught me to respect other people and their property, and everything around me.

I think that is lacking a lot these days.
Maybe parents are busier now, and don't have the same amount of time to spend with their kids to teach them these things, but it seems that they will instead look to everyone else but themselves to blame for their children's actions.

Apparently the two kids were playing with a molotov cocktail, whether they actually intended to set fire to the bush is another matter.

Regardless, their 11-12, there isn't too much authorities can do with them other than to caution them.

I've been living in the gladstone region for a little over three months and there have been about 10 or more bushfires lit since i've been here it's sad because the place is really nice.

The ones that get caught always seem to be volunteer firefighters...

True. Mainly because those who are potential arsonists often feel the need to be a hero and participate in the extinguishing of the fire. They get off on being in the BRT (big red truck) or the fuss created by the fire and in the past there were very few procedures in place to prevent them from joining brigades. Things have changed in the last couple of years and now police checks are necessary before they can join the NSW Rural Fire Service. I'm not sure about volunteer firefighting agencies in other states but they probably have similar procedures. It is often joked that all members of the RFS are pyro's but I for one like to put the fire out and hate the idea of lighting anything up. It's a shame that a few bad apples have created a reputation that is undeserved for the majority of volunteers.
Kids have a natural fascination with fire and it's up to the parents to allow kids to explore this interest in a safe way and educate them in the consequences of indiscriminate fire lighting.

At 11 & 12 yo - the parents should also be made responsible !
When we were all 11 & 12 we had a fascination with fire as well, but didnt do that cause our parents brought us up to respect peoples property. Now in a busier world, parents arent teaching their kids morals / values anymore. Give them some trees / plants and make them replant each tree, and water them every day... !
At 11 our parents knew where we were every second, down the milko or cornershop playing video games or pinnies. Street lights came on - we were home ! Gotta love that daylight saving thing as a kid

Not always, but yes, the nature of being a volunteer organisation that deals with bushfires causes a natural attraction for arsonists.

However, the danger however is the media and others over-emphasising and capitalising on this fact demoralises the entire organisation, and the other 69,999 people of the Rural Fire Service who are not arsonists. And it certainly does hit hard, given the fact that the overwhelming majority of bushfirefighters are volunteers.

A few years ago the NSW Rural Fire Service updated it's recruitment policy for the application of new members: Several interviews need to take place between the district fire control and the respective brigades, police checks are undertaken on new members and members transferring brigades, a psycholgical profile of arsonists also exists to identify members who exhibit certain traits and so on.

These people are the scum of the earth!

But the media hype up the times that are high fire danger, I often think to myself that if they didn't mention it would the firebugs (who lets face it are as stupid as it gets or wanna be hero's) figure it out for them selves?

When they hype it up that a day isgoing to be high risk they are just promoting it to these morons.

Being a volunteer firefighter myself and have fought my share of bushfires i have to agree and disagree although there has been several cases of arsonists turning out to be volunteer fireys the ones that have been caught more often than not have turned out to be people that have been expelled from volunteer brigades and are no longer active members...

Arsonists are the scum of the earth and those of us who are the honest ones dont like being tarred with the same brush....

I would pay money to see these scumbags stand near an 80 mtr tall sugargum while it self combusts because of the sheer heat that a bushfire puts out or witness the heartbreak you feel when you have to pack up you gear and evacuate after you realise there is no longer any hope of saving a poor familys home that you have been trying to defend for 4 1/2 hours then to go back after the fire front has passed only to see the the place in ashes..

Ive been there and its not pretty and if there were any other volunteers around im sure they would agree with me those of us that are honest do it mostly because we want to help those in need not because we want to start the damn things...... :

Having witnessed the massive Gippsland fires last bushfire season, It really makes me wonder what goes through peoples minds getting off on lighting fires and causing widespread destruction. If I had my way I'd round up all of those good for nothing bastard firebugs, Douse them in petrol and flick a match.....Burn the bastards alive, It's all they are fit for.
