Default Damn Vicroads

I'm based in Victoria but work in Canberra, sometimes for extended periods. So I keep a car rego'd in Victoria. I organised with Vicroads to have my rego renewals sent to my Canberra address. I even have a change of address confirmation letter specifying my new postal address with the vehicle rego next to it.

To cut a long story short Vicroads haven't sent my rego renewal. The car is now over the 3 month expiry period meaning now I have to go for a RWC and re-register the vehicle. A real hassle and significant financial cost seeing as the car has been extensively modified.

Has vicroads helped anyone else out in this situation by nullifying the expiry period? Afterall it was them who stuffed up sending the rego renewal and it was them who stuffed up sending the rego expiry reminder.

I've found all this out this morning, will be calling Vicroads first thing Monday morning.

Why wait three months after expiry before chasing it up? Id say youre gonna be stiff out of luck.

They may not have sent the papers, but you could have at any time in the last 3 months chased them up.

In Qld the rego sticker has the number of the month it is registered until on it.
Have you not looked at this in the last 3 months as you would have walked past it numerous times?

I am a bit surprised you didn't notice earlier, but anyway, I doubt you will get any leyway from Vicroads.

The car is located in Melbourne. I am located in Canberra, the nature of my work sees me all over the place. I haven't been to the property where the car is stored in six months due to work commitments amongst other things. The whole reason for changing my postal address with vicroads was because I am regularily in Canberra.

Oh well was hoping someone else had the same experience with vicroads, appears not.

There is no leeway at Vicroads any longer. Your car is unregistered at midnight of the expiry date. And subject to all road legislation thereafter. Insurance would be voided to I imagine.

You never know your luck............

You may have to proove you were working in Canberra for the last 6 months, show service records that show what klms were on your car last time it was serviced and show them proof of how many klms is on your car now.

Also do you have a copy of the date and time and name of person you spoke to when you did the change of postal address.

What address did they send the rego papers too?

Bit surprising they dont send a reminder that your rego has not been paid and is lapsed

Good Luck.........

Sorry! But I know that they won't give you an extension...This happens all the time...more than people think and unfortunately it is the drivers responsibility to ensure their vechile is registered and roadworthy at ALL times. Hate to be the bearer of bad news...but you will need to have a vechile test and have it re-registered. I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you get someone REALLY compassionate! mate, i think youre outta luck too.

i had a trailer (yep, a trailer) go over the 3 months by 1 DAY, and no way would they wave it thru.
cost me just over $100 to do, instead of the $30 renewal.

in the end, they have rules, and have a profit margin to keep, so i think u might have to contribute to the vicroads fund... sorry.

Would be a diif story if the car was in ACT as well, but the car is in Vic.

And if he was going to be a permanent residence in ACT, also I bet you his drivers licence is not ACT, its a Vic Licence

Yep, Vic licence as my primary residence is in Victoria. Big Trev, I wouldn't think the car I drive on Victorian roads should be registered in the ACT. I'm sure I'd get pulled up in Victoria for having a ACT rego car.

Everyone else I work with who are in the same situation have their QLD transport or whatever registered in the jurisdiction the car is located and their ACT transport registered in the ACT.

I wish the government would setup a national rego and regulation scheme. i.e. one set of rego rules and one bureaucracy for the entire country.

I'll find out tomorrow morning what the story is, but by the sounds of this thread I'm not going to come away happy. Could be a blessing in disguise though. If the car has to come apart its a good excuse for a rebuild and some more radical modifications post rego. I've just got to find the time to do it.

Vicroads do post rego stickers to interstate addresses, however, I think that it’s only for registered companies.

Cheers

That would be so much easier, so it wont happen, because states will have to share...

They post them for everyone as they've sent them to me interstate before. They just stuffed up this time somehow.

I spoke to nice chick at Vic Roads the other day about this type of issue as I was thinking of selling my car. The rego was due so I was not sure if I would sell with or without reg. She made it very clear if its more than 3 months than tough luck pal it will have to go through the pits again...NO EXCUSES...her words not mine. She advised that it is your responsibility to know your rego is due, not theirs to chase you up.

Yeah I called. I asked using the nicest manners I could muster and they told me to get stuffed in the nicest manners they could muster.

The vicroads guy checked where the rego renewal was sent to and according to their computer system it was sent to my Canberra address but for some reason it didn't get sent until mid June even though rego was due in early May. Not sure what happened there.

This stinks of a computer error followed up by a data fix and some dodgy follow up support. Or maybe I just stuffed up and threw the rego renewal out then threw out the following rego expiry reminder. But I very much doubt it.

Anyhow, time to pull down the car and build it twice as good.

No doubt you rang the call centre and got the standard corporate line. My advice is to go to a Vicroads office and speak to the manager. They do have the authority to fix stuff ups but the call centre and counter staff don't.
It has to be an easier and cheaper option than getting a RWC, after all the car has not changed ownership.
Cheers
