Default Earthquake ! (The Shakey Isles)

Was browsing AFF just over an hour ago and had a strange feeling like I was falling of my chair & the house creaked a bit.... sure enough it was a Magnitude 6.2 earthquake, the fifth this morning the biggest being 6.7, another hit just before 11:30am. All centred just of the Sth Island near Milford.

Anyone got any earthquake experiences, this was my first.

Years ago I was working in Parramatta (NSW) in an office when I felt something similar to what you described.

Worked out it was the Newcastle Earthquake that devastated the area ....... Wasnt a nice feeling.

I was in LA the week after the riots in South central LA ('92). The first night there we couldn't sleep due to jetlag and was lying on the bed when the bedhead starting hitting the wall (it was a good foot away from it). Thought it was my mate shaking the bed, told him to knock it off, he yells back that it wasn't him, he was on his bed. Jumped up and looked out the window (we were on the 12th floor), car alarms going off everywhere. Turned on the telly to reports of a 7.2 earthquake has just hit LA, in the valley somewhere.

Later that morning my g/f (now wife) was in the shower when an aftershock of around 6 hit, the water swayed everywhere. Her brother was staying as well with us on the 4th floor, he had plaster falling off his ceiling.

IIRC, a couple of people died in it 'cos that day we went to Universal Studios and the Earthquake ride was closed due to last nights deaths in the quake.

After surviving that, having a crazed gunman on the loose in the Grand Canyon carjacking anyone to escape all the roadblocks was a piece of cake...hehe

I was in the LA one also it was around 4 in the morning. The whole week I kept my passport etc on me as they said it might be a pre shock and a worse one might be coming. Every channel on the news had the rictor scale in the corner of the screen showing all the after shocks.
Matty sounds like the same sort of trip as me. Got off the plane early that night, stayed there a week, then a bus to Vegas for a week.

I was in Banda Ache doing the cleanup after the Tsunami, and there was some huge aftershocks there. One in the middle of the day had our Unimog trucks bouncing off each other the ground was shaking that much. The locals were a little freaked out, but then again, they had just watched 290 000 of their countryman die in simular circumstances.

Yeah we were there a few months back and the locals said it was almost an everyday occurance, but most were too small to feel (or we were too drunk)

Im another survivor of the Newcastle Earthquake.
I was in the old "Orbit 1" amusment parlour which was in King St opposite the Tower Cinema.
It was a freaky experience as the floor seemed to move about 1mtr in each direction while it was happening.
Once it had stopped people were wandering the streets trying to work out what was happening, and the cops were being cowboys driving everywhere like idiots.

I was in L.A only a few weeks ago and there was a tremor centred in Chatsworth north of the city . We were about 40 miles away from it and never felt a thing.Apparenty tremors are pretty common there .They were joking about it on the news on tv ... Glad it wasn't a big one like the 92 one mentioned.

I lived in Whitby in Wellington about 12 years ago. I woke up one night on the floor. Really confusing. Turned it was an earth tremour.... Really weird feeling. They reckon that it is only a matter of time before most of NZ dissapears into the ocean.... I hope that they can get the sheep off in time!!!! ..... Just a joke guys!@!!!

I was in one a few years ago in Darwin.

Being in a house on stilts and having had half a bottle of bundy, I didn't know if it was me or the drink until the bottle rattled across the glass table.

Pfffitt... happens all the time there bro. I was born & bred there(Gizzy)

Most were just like the earth became jelly-like and last long enough for you to figure out what it is then its over. No worries.
One beauty I do remember tho, was when it sounded like a fully loaded freight train was coming thru the wall!! We just heard this low rumble coming, it 'passed' thru and then we could heard it moving away. Mean AZ!
