speedo that ORALLY VERBALLY tells you your speed

like say for all speeds above 40 once you hit 77.5 it says 80 and if you hover between 78 and 82km it doesnt say anything till you change to the nearest 5km/hr.

like you speed up to 82.5km/hr it says 85km/hr.

Is there anything like this out there so you can watch the road and not the speedo?

learn to listen to the sound of your engine to work out how fast you're going would be one way. but seriously, how hard is it to quickly glance your speedo every now and then? aim to drive slower than the posted limit and you shouldn't have a problem.

To work it would want some sort of signal from the speedo drive that triggers the speed recordings (MP3’s) that are saved somewhere, somehow. You might want to have it cut out the entertainment audio when it is reading. To get it to happen automatically it would have to tie in with sat nav which hopefully has the latest speed limits programmed in to it (including roadworks?). I’ve no doubt that someone could do it given enough time, $$, intelligence and will power. You could get it to do a subtle beep if you get within 5kmh of the preset limit. If you go with an audio recording remember that (most) women’s voices are more soothing to a male. I don’t know if there is a system that does this (Jaycar might have some sort of kit?), cruise control might be a simpler option and remember that your speedo only has to be accurate to 10% according to the ADR’s.

Mercedes years ago had a speed limiter (like a pitlane speed limiter) that you could set so that you didn’t accidentally go past the low speed limits in the city. Other companies like Nissan, BMW and Chevreolet have got head up displays so that you can see the road and what speed you are traveling at the same time without having to constantly look down and refocus.

On a lighter note it would be interesting to be heading down to turn 1 at Phillip Island (or Sandown) thinking I’m not going to lift off until I hear the recording say “Wow! 200kmh” (or 220kmh or 250kmh whatever your car is capable of).

So when you are speeding up, it will say "5, 10, 15, 20, 25, etc..."
The only thing more annoying than that would be having the missus try to play her Mariah "im strangling a cat" Carey...
But, if it is hard-wired, would be alot harder to chuck out the window than said CD...

A couple of our trucks have an adjustable speed limiter. They're drive by wire so it's all done through the computerbut surely there is something available that can be retrofitted to cars.

Basically, you accelerate to your desired speed, and in our case, push the lever down which brings up on the dash that the speed limiter is set at sy 80kmh. So every time you stop or slow down, when you accelerate it governs the engine output in order to keep the speed from rising above your set speed. Very handy feature that allows you to totally concentrate on your driving and not worry about your speed, unless you were travelling down a steep hill driver intervention is required.

To reset to a different speed zone you simply push the button, adjust your speed then push the button to set.

A device like this might be more beneficial to you than a talking speedo.

You guys still running 1.0? I'm running 1.3 software (Hardware) in mine ... It doesn't have the glitches of the first programs. But, from time to time Whinge.tsp does fire up and kill the fun. Also be on the lookout for some common viruses - PMS.exe and MCD.exe being most common. I tend to experience both on a monthly basis. Currently working on a patch/invisibility shield ....

Seriousy maybe a shift light or something? I had in my stato a function where you could set a speed limiter and you could go over it (handy for overtaking) but it would make a beeping sound.

Either that or if you are passing cars maybe you are going to fast?

Sounds good definately able to be implemented in modern cars

as for the fly by wire system and speed control you could get around it and hook up a WOT button that will snap open the throttle body when you push it but im guessing the computer of said vehicle will freak out when the tps reads what it shouldnt :P

I was chatting with a neighbour on the weekend who has just bought a new Peugeot 307. He was telling me about a feature that's built into the cruise control that works like a speed limiter. There are a number of speed presets and once you select the appropriate one then you can't travel above that speed.
He tried to drive faster than the preset speed and the car just would not go any faster, but, from my understanding, it's not a cruise control so you can decelerate and accelerate, but not accelerate past your preset speed.
Not a bad feature at all I reckon.

With todays modern technology it is not only orally and verbally possible but vocally as well.

On a side note most modern cars have speed alert chime - it usually lasts about 2.34 minutes before I get out the glovebox manual and read how to turn it off. Most annoying thing ever.

Orally is not possible as it requires a mouth. Verbally implies words are being used vocally, usually but not exclusively by human voice.
