Hi All

you know the inhibitor switch on the passenger's side of your automatic, whitey cream in colour, what does it do?

It inhibits the starter from starting whilst in gear.
The car will only start in park or neutral and if faulty will stop the car starting at all.

that is the primary function but AFAIK it also gives the signal telling the ECU (and the cluster in higher models) what gear is selected

Yep it does both
It actually has two separate circuits, one is the inhibitor switch and the other is a series of resistors which tell the ECU / Cluster what gear you are in.

WHY ARE U ASKING.TO CHECK IF ITS STUFFED PUT INTO 1st DRIVE IT, IF IT STILL CHANGES THRU THE GEARS ITS STUFFED IF IT STAYS IN FIRST AND U NEED TO CHANGE GEARS ITS OK.

Mine doesn't do this, but is still buggereed.
With mine sometimes I can be Park or Neutral and still can't start the car - seems to think it's still in gear. My old boy made a bypass for it so all is good with the world now.
