I was going to fab a 7" touchscreen into an AU double din housing with a CarPC in the back, will either put it in the truck or sell all the parts.

Here is mine from the side, so you can see how the two units sit with the curve of the dash. Its about the best they could do when i got it installed.

I had the 7inch JVC in my old beast, i made a trim out of balsa wood to suit the dash and it looked good.

this is s very handy thread to come across....

i been looking at upgrading do a touch screen system... but i was told the fords are not a true double din... and double din systems will not fit.... it would seem that is not entirely true...

also... i have to get the original unit out first.. i even went and bought the tool to remove it.. and i still can't get the bastard thing out.... i really don't wanna pay someone to do it for me....

anyone got advice on a 'method' of removal?

just give the "tool" a tap as there is little prongy things that need to be pressed outward.. about 2" into the holes

if your unlucky.. they break and your stuffed.. then your friend becomes mr chisel and mr hammer LOL and i hope you didnt like those CDs..

well i think the clip on the right hand side is fuggered.... so i got no idea who i might get in there... unless i really just give it a massive pull and rip it out.. i didn't wanna have to destroy the original head unit.. thats all... :S

Hi Eu-genixX, I've not posted here before so not sure how to post pics, I've just bought a 1999 AU Fairmont (my first Ford, I've always had Holdens for the past 40 years).

Anyway, I've had a bit of experience trying to remove the AU radio, here are some pics of how the clips work on the sides of the radio. my clips were all stuffed (the pics are not of my radio) but managed to get the radio out with some stiff plastic and a knife.

I can let you have more details if you like.

.. now see if I can post this without stuffing it up (I'm an old man )

thanks...... yeah i just don't know how to get down the side to push that clip back in.. it feels like it's pushed too far out to the side.. and the took is sliding straight past it.. and won't push back in towards the middle... i might try and have a look next weekend.. coz i want to try and buy a unit in the next few weeks..

just make sure your not pushing the pins down on the inner edge of the headunit
as when i was doing mine they were caching on the sheet metal and going inside hte unit instead of out toward the clips

i ended up using two pieces of wire. stuck them in and after one hour , and 400 uses of a certain profanity, finally yanked it out.

if you want to get a proffesional to install a unit, if they say its not possible before even giving it a try, go somewhere else. i've isntalled 3 different single DIN units into my console and all have fit better and looked beter than the first one i had 'proffesionally' done.

now can i hijack for a second, does anyone know if its possible to install a monitor into the dash in front of the passenger seat? i have two headrest monitors for the back, but feel guilty for neglecting he/she who sits next to me! any thoughts?

As long as you dont have an airbag yes it is possible to put a screen there. As long as it turns of when the car is started so the police dont get upset.

I also have a double din DVD player in the dash of my XR8 they definitley fit. I was told they didnt then went to another shop and they said they fit no worries and it did. I dont have any pics though :(
