Angry AU xr6 exhaust note???

G'day guys i am in need of help, i have searched this topic and havent found the answer to my question. I own an AUI xr6 vct, now it already has headers fitted and a 2.5 inch redback exhaust. Heres the problem it doesnt sound right its to quiet and doesnt have that note that i desire, the system has what looks like a large muffler in the middle and what appears to be a smaller muffler box under the boot. I NEED THE FORD NOTE, PLEASE HELP!!!!

Hey mate i know what you mean cos my mate had the exact same problem.

Mine's a series 3 forte, and all its got is Pacemaker extractors and a full 2 1/2 inch system and it sounds great, loud too.

try getting a hotdog put on the system? not sure whether thats the right solution but mine has one and it made a fair bit of difference.

Hi Chris, I have the exact same car and really love my note
I have no extractors yet but just put on a lukey ultra flo and 2.5 inch stainless pipe and it has a baby V8 note to it

Now I'm not for these really loud exhausts, it's got to be decent of course
The original system in my forte had three mufflers and xr had two

Swap the mufflers over, get a Magnaflow WOT muffler, and a small straight through hotdog.
It will sound like you have a cam in it

I've got a magnaflow centre muffler and a small hotdog in the rear and its plenty loud - sounds like you have a rear resonator if it looks like a smaller version of your muffer, replace this with a hotdog and you should have the sound your after

all the above would work greatly, but you definatly need to get rid of that rear resonator at the very least, i've got a 2.5" RedBack without the rear resonator, just the front and mid mufflers and its a beast

Has your redback system got the rear muffler on it? If it has replace that with a straight thru section from diff back, you should get the sound your after.

We have 2 AUIIs my SR wagon has a 2.5" cat back system and sounds great for a six,the wife VCT ghia will be getting one similar soonish,to open it up abit, its too quiet,It had a brand new stock exhaust on it put on just before we got it : :

I was told by the bloke at the exhaust place here that if i removed the resonator that it would give it a terrible sounding drone, though the exhaust guy doesnt seem very knowledgeable when it comes to the au's when i asked about getting a note from my car he instructed me to buy a holden..... yeah cos the v6 sounds great doesnt it...idiot

So the general concensis seems to be remove the rear resonator, now should it be replaced with a straight piece of inch exhaust or a hotdog, i want it to be loud (not overly loud) but the note is the most important thing

In my opinion Straight pipe, cost effective, and no restrictions.

I dont bother with "MOST" exhaust fitters for there input, alot of them dont care what you drive, and dont know whats best for you mods/car.
Do your own research and choose what suits your car/taste best that way they wont just try and clear there stock to make a sale.

I'd be going somewhere else if a dude said that to me. Sounds like a knob who couldnt give a rats.

You would be surprised how much the rear resi muffles sound. try a tail pipe with no resi to start with. Keep the old one. If you dont like it, you can always get the old tail pipe refitted. Is your current mid section muffler a straight thru design? If not, perhaps look at that.

G'day mate,
I'd advise against putting straight pipe on the tailpipe without a hotdog because in my opinion it sounds drony and farty. I've got a redback system with a single muffler and the note turned to crap after i put my pacemakers and highflow cat on.In the future i'm going to be putting a hotdog in to improve the note a bit.

yes a hot dog will soften the note slightly. Probably not a bad idea but trialing a few options might be the way to go for personal tastes.

I know a v8 would be great but as a p plater we have to abide by the restrictions of no v8s no turbo or no superchargers. thanks for the help guys, PS with the hotdog would it be best to place it where the resonator is now or somewhere closer to the muffler??

advance headers is what the brand could be. website

Over all not a bad header, I'd be inclined to keep them unless they are cracked.
