Default Help with Insurance on AU2 XR8

Hi everyone, I'm in the process of re-asessing my insurance and wondering if anyone can help out with a few of my concerns. Anyone who is with Just Car insurance could be a big help.

I've tried searching the forums but constructive posts are few and far between, and I have some specific queries.

Im with RACV atm;
*Im 26 and my car is stored under a locked carport
*my premium is $1494 per year (pay by the month)
*basic excess $500
*insured for market value

Just Car Insurance online quote gave me;
*An 'online' premium of $1452 (can you pay by the month with Justcar?)
*basic excess $500 with a theft excess of $800
*cars value is listed as $13,000 (what I paid for it, but is the car insured for this amount or market value? If the car is insured for the amount I paid, is this the reason there is an $800 theft excess?)

*It looks like Just Car allow pretty much any mods, I added extractors and intake to the quote (as Im going to do them in the future) can anyone tell me if RACV allows these mods? I haven't dared ask yet, and I'd rather hear people's opinions/experiences with insurance companies first hand.

My main issues with switching to Just Car are:
Do they have pay by the month;
The $800 theft excess on top of the $500 basic excess (I'd like to raise my basic excess to lower the premium, but I dont want to be paying close to $2k if my car is stolen. However, is the car insured for market value, or the original purchase price?)

If anyone can help me out with the;

Pros and cons of Just Car insurance;
Pros and cons of any other insurance companies theyve dealt with;
Point out anything I've missed, it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Rob.

Hi mate,
Have you tried Shannons? I have my XR insured through them and am very happy. Insured for purchase price, choice of repairer and as far as I know you can elect to pay by the month. Can't help you in terms of mods, however insuring for market value IMO is a waste of time. Especially not knowing on any given day what exactly the market value is. I once asked QBE to explain to me how they would calculate market value if my car was written off today and no one was able to explain it to me. Left me very worried.
Cheers,
Ian

I'm also 26 and I've got my AUIII XR through AAMI for around $400 per year (locked garage every night, driven daily to an undercover garage at work). Excess is $300, and I've got it insured for over market value. I know an XR8 would be a little more to insure than the six, but surely not $1000 more???

Woah.

I'm 22 and have just left Just Car for Shannons. I was insured with Just Car for around $1500pa, but Shannons quoted me $1080pa, which includes pay by the month, a cheaper excess, choice of repairer and a totally free windscreen every year.

Give them a call, it was the best thing I have done insurance wise.

Hey PANUP do you know if you have to pay an extra theft excess (to get paid out the purchase price) if your car is stolen?

monkeysxr6 is that $400 full comp? (very competetive if it is) but do you know what AAMI are like with mods?

I'm with Shannons as well......I'm 37 and Just Car was the most expensive quote.......$1850 with 65% NCB!!!!! Car is locked up at night....

Shannons is $1250 with no extra charges for pay by the month. My car is an AU 111 XR8 insured for 19k......I've been with shannon's with 2 other cars and their service has been excellent.

My brother in law recently bought a 2003 Mini Cooper S and insured it with Just Cars. He put in a claim for a minor accident where he swerved to avoid a car coming out from a side street and hit the median strip and damaged tyres and wheels....It took Just car 3 weeks to give the go ahead for repairs... They wanted mobile phone records, witness statement from his passengers before they would even consider processing the claim....

I had 2 claims with shannons over the last 10 years, one at fault and one ot at fault. Both were settled immediately.....

Hey Peuty, if youre 22 and were paying 1500 with Just Car, and Im 26 and paying about the same, surely there has to be another factor affecting my quotes (Im over 25, isnt that a good thing?) Insurers might class my suburb as a car thiefs paradise?

I will give Shannons a go and see what I get.

Edit: Thanks for the heads up Doug, all the more reason to give Shannons a go.

Yeah not too sure on that one mate. It seems to me that insurance premiums are a law unto themselves in regards to what you get.

What is your driving history like?

Weird huh. I guess it would have something to do with your location, but I am by no means in the best of locations either. Who knows. Worth giving Shannons a call anyway.

We are insured with Swann with 1 no at fault claim. We pay around $600 per year but are in our 40's.

Isn't one of the conditions at Shannons that all drivers are 25+?

Nope.

They won't do an online quote for under 25's, but they will insure you if you meet their criteria after a phone call.

Another Shannons customer here and not going anywhere else anytime soon.

I am 22, have had my ute since 19 and with every single mod listed it is $1200 per year, full comp maximum NCB in my name. Can't beat that.

Being in Tassie and the locked garage will greatly reduce your premium.

BTW, another vote for Shannons.

I am with NRMA costs around 900.00 per year for AU 3 XR8 that is garaged but also have a multi policy discount this is insured as agreed value of 20,000 and also covers all mods. I am in my thirties (I know bloody old) and have had no accidents but Hubby (Black XR) has had a couple actually two within the last two months (but we won't discuss that and lets hope he can't read this). Will be ringing Shannons when mine expires and see what they have to offer.

Yup - full comprehensive - she goes missing (bloody hard to do that) or it gets written off I get a nice little cheque in under two weeks. They're not too bad on mods either - I'm going through the process of getting them to add my soon-to-be-attached 2 1/2" full system now - they're only going to add about $20 because it just goes into the next scale of 'things you've done to your car', or something like that.

Shannons knocked me back, because:

Im not actively in the auto industry;
The car is my primary transport (not a weekender);
Not stored in a locked garage.

The guy suggested AAMI, their online quote was $1676 per year 'online'

How old are you mate? They quoted me $1060 online. Looks like i wont call shannons if they gave you those 'poor' excuses.

Rang RACV and the woman i spoke to:
*couldnt specify any mods that they wouldnt cover (exhaust, wheels, lowering, ok)
*couldnt tell me how much my premium would go up if I added any mods
*said that if I didnt list mods on my premium, it wouldnt affect whether I got a payout if the car was written off, but that the mods wouldnt be considered when calculating the amount of re-imbursement. She said it used to be the case that you'd forfeit everything if you didnt declAre something, but not anymore.

Come renewal time, I can raise my excess to 1k for a 15% discount, 1.5k for a 25% discount, or 2k for a 35% discount.

I'll probably go for a higher excess, and a one off payment (instead of monthly) to save some $

Can anyone spot anything I've missed?

I'm 26, but come to think of it the guy didn't even ask me for my age. He was more concerned with what 'enthusiast' activities I pursued. I had to list a certain amount of auto events I attended each year, and accrue a certain amount of points to go any further with the quote!

He said "were not like a normal car insurer...we only provide insurance for enthusiasts"

Did anyone else here have to do this?

That's a bit odd. I'm not what I'd call 'active' in the auto industry, my XR is my primary transport (30000+kms a year), but it is stored in a locked garage. Did you tell them you were an active member on here and you regularly attend car events?? Might be worth another try.

Cheers

RACV allow 2 or 3 mods only.
exhaust, stereo and rims and anything after that youll be on your own.
they cant tell you the info you wanted as you probably didnt "apply" as such.
go down there (or ring) and get a quote where they put your info in the computer.
be honest, get the quote and then ask if you can add this and that and they will give you a new figure.

RACV voided insurance on my AU because my 17 inch rims were NOT made by either Ford or Tickford.
so keep that in mind.
