Rims (making legal)

Is there a way to make some rims legal on the AU-BA series? I have a set of 17" chromes that i'd love to use, but have the wrong offset and would require spacers... is there a way to make them legal by welding a permanent spacer to the rim and extending the bolts? i'm looking around 20-25mm...

short answer, no.

use the cash from selling the 17's and buy other rims. besides, chrome doesnt look any good smaller than 19" lol

I second that motion! There is no way. Your insurance may possibly not pay out your car if they see that done to your wheels as well. It's Un roadworthy. Sell the 17's and buy some bigger, safer and legal wheels.

I will be sticking with 17's... as tyres are still somewhat affordable :P

Its just a shame i cant use these rims... they came with the car and look rather schmick with it IMO... and its only my opinion that matters at the end of the day :P

Oh well... time to look for replacements :( thanks guys

You asked me the same question yesterday at my place lol. Answer = NO lol. Must be engineered if you do that. Sell em off big boy, or like I said, stick the spacers on and use them... Like I said yesterday, A few people have used them with no problems, just don't off the popo like my 17yr old mate with his R33 yesterday. $2100 defects later.... hahahaha

Bugger it lol. Police didn't even look sideways at you when you chirped it up at Mt Panorama the other week, so whats the chance of them eyeing your spacers lol. Me on the other hand.... well thats history isn't it lol. Of course you could always sell them and put the cash to use on your money pit :-)

Well I would... provided its the right material, the bolts are lenghted and are the right strength and the whole thing is torqued to the right pressure's, it will be safer than simply tightening the correct wheels with a rattle gun :P

Unless its chrome fishhooks on a dark coloured E series 5 litre. Then they are reasonable. Please dont flame me. I love my AU. ALL HAIL THE AU!

Apart from anything else, I think you'll find that in NSW spacers are illegal. If you have a prang your insurance company may disown you.

Same applies to hub adapters.

What rms would you need spacers for on an AU? They must be massive offset! AU is +35 offset, and e series are 0 (roughly) offset. To require spacers on an AU, the rims must be +50 or so, as the AU will take anything up to around +44 offset, depending on rim width.

Hub adapters, while technically illegal, are a safer option than straight out spacers.

I dont know what the rims were off originally... but they came with the car when i bought it... but... compaired to the BA rims i have (16" steelies)... the chromes sit inwards by about 20-25mm

check on the inside of the rim it should have rim size and offset stamped on them

Ok... dont know what i'm looking for... had a couple of things on the insides of the spokes...

1 Spoke had: 17X7JET DOT-T
1 SPoke had: D (empty space)
H 171 750 (possibly)
C 17 50

does either of those help?

Yep, that would do it, a 17x7 with a 50 offset will sit in around 27mm more than a 17x8 with 35 offset (50 - 15 plus half of the 1" difference = 27mm)

So my guess of 20-25mm was atleast close :P

They are worth next to nothing... as chrome is lifting rather badly... but could be powdercoated easily (been qouted $40 a rim)

Knowing my luck it would be :P Now to keep an eye out for 17" chromies that are legal and better than mine :P Thanks btw guys.
