Just wondering what the road stats are in the NT now that the new speed laws are in place. Has there been a positive outcome on the road statistics ?

The road toll is up. But it may level out over the next week or so.

I am driving up to Darwin on Saturday. The new limit will add 3 hours to my trip. That will mean driving at night or over nighting some place. I think that I will send my accomodation bill to Clare Martin...... I wonder if she will pay it??

It certainly does feel slow..I used to sit on 150-160Km/h. Made massive difference in travel times and never once felt it was too fast. The Stuart isa great road for the most part and at higher speedsyou concentrate way more than when "crusin" at 130km.h. Most people still do less than that anyways..was a stupid decision.

A couple of years ago, A Watercart was turning off into berri springs off the Stuart Highway. He waited a few seconds to let a few cars past then when it was clear he proceded to turnoff.
Halfway through turning he felt a large thud in the rear end of the truck. A motorcycle hit him at an estimated speed of 250-300 kmph!!! The bike was just about unidentifiable let alone the rider. Saying that the road toll is generally made up of European or japanese tourists in a Britz Camper not used to speeds over 80kph. Thats why there are road signings in 6 different languages on the highway. I have blown a front tyre just out of Tennant creek at around 170 kph, boy was that an experience. The Stuart Highway.. good times, good times..

I seem to remember several ultra high speed splats on the east coast. The 100km/h speed limit did not save them either. The new limit has nothing to do with safety and a LOT to do with dogmatic agenda. If comrade claire is not rolled over this at the next election then it will be game over for ever. Territorians, you are our last hope........ |

I said nothing about the speed limits at all saving lives , in fact I do believe I'd rather the open limits. Its not really about saving lives at all, just putting a limit there to show that there are boundaries... like any sort of driving, you drive to the conditions. I just happened to know the bloke with the motorcycle. He was a mates uncle, a mad bike bloke who even wore a Jacket with the signage Up on 1. Just naming a few experiences I have had with the Stuart highway. As OutbackJack said that Clare Martin's position as Chief Minister is just about set in as the Bitumen that the Stuart Highway is made of. All Clare Martin has to do is not be associated with the CLP.

The CLP would do well to keep the reintroduction of (//) pledge (as policy) for 130km/h zones, regardless - if they were to be defeated at the next NT election or not. Losing an elections does not mean a particular policy is wrong, and (//) for those lengths of highway is 'right'.
Interstaters can support the fight, I myself will buy the stickers, already have a shirt:-) http://www.keepntlimitfree.org/Shop/...6/Default.aspx NSW will NOT remove its ability to once again post speed derestriction in our new speed guidelines, but its implementation means we must first remove all remaining derestrictions signs in order to have a safe re-intriduction to our highest standard roads.

Sadly, Jodeen's other policies are the ones that need work. This particular stand of hers has the support of the majority of territorians, but it alone won't be enough for her to roll Clare out the door. Territorians haven't yet forgotten/forgiven the Shane Stone years either.

+1 for the reintroduction of mandatory sentencing. OBJ, i havent heard the CLP mention this once so far. i hope to hell Clare gets the boot, i mean, a water front project that no one was consulted about or wants, speed limits that no one was consulted about, and when challenged to show the statistics they refused, removal of mandatory sentencing that has seem junivial crime sky rocket cause those little bastards know that all they'll get is a slap on the wrist.....i know where im voting

Speed limits on some roads make no difference at all.
