Ive got a noise coming from beneath the car, it sounds like tin clashing together and occurs on smooth prescise bumps. at first it was pretty quiet and i had put up with it, but now all of a sudden its gotten really loud.
At first it sounded like it was coming from the front right section, but now ive noticed that it does it once the back wheel hit the bump, so it's prob the rear right section. My first thought would be the bushes. how do i check which ones may be faulty, what do i look for. Also what other things may be the cause? i was thinking maybe the right side of the sway bar has come off and the noise is it bouncing on and off where its mount was. Any suggestions appreciated... |

Watts link bushes. Sounds like when the shackles come loose on a leaf sprung car. I went back to 15's and it quietened down a lot, gave the 17's to my mum, now she has the noisy beggars.

Top shock mounts are a common fault in IRS cars. Put down the back seats and pull up the carpet type covering over the wheel arch in the boot to check.

Yeah could be shock mounts, another one that goes and does a bit of knocking in the rear is the lower rear ball joints. Had to replace all of these in mine.

Yes there is balljoints in the rear, lower balljoints that look like a bush and are actually a ball joint. Just go ask ford.

Just a thought, check the "tin" backing plates for the brakes, both front and back.
They're a bit flimsy and are each only held on by three small studs which can come loose, causing the plate to rattle when you go over sharp little bumps. Mine had a similar noise if I drove over the cats eyes they use with the lane markings and that was the cause. Just tightened up the 10mm studs and all fixed. |

finally got time to have a look. Dont know what a stuffed shock mount looks like so heres a pic:
pulled the wheel off, everything was a bit too tight to move around and find the noise, but i did notice this: its a split in the rubber, could this bush be stuffed? I forgot to check the lower shock mount, might do it tomorow, also the sway bar which i thought could be the problem was fine. |

Loose spare wheel in the boot???
May sound simple but trust me, I had a mates car with a similar sound, tried tracing down looking over all the exhaust, bushes etc etc etc, then had a thought, popped the boot, had a look and the spare wheel was loose, tightened it up and what do you know, the noise was gone. Col.

^^My mum had this problem when she first bought the Futura, before I bought it from her.
Bryan Byrt Ford had just fitted new tyres, and the best old tyre was relegated to spare duty. They'd put the screw in disc (the bit that holds the tool tray into the spare wheel and clamps everything down) in its place, but hadnt actually screwed it in.

put it on a hoist or up on ramps, crawl under and give the mufflers some good hard wacks in variouse places, that will usually expose the dodgey item.
