new rims 2moro/ painting brake question

Hey all,
im getting new rims after work 2moro night, well there second hand but new 2 me, haha

19" FPV GT (5 spoke) copies with tyres,

how ever i was woundering what the best way and easiest way to paint the calipers and all that, i didnt really want to take the brakes apart, due 2 it being a pain due to series 1 set up

also what colour should i get ? i would go red coz of my car but every car i see around my area are painted red, n e suggestions ?

paint em yellow, they wont stand out if they're red as much as yellow, what did the wheels set ya back???

um.. $1,000 with 4 tyres.. cant remember the brand but they have only done 5,000ks on all 4. all i remember is when i was with him when he brought the tyres it stung hima bout 850 - 900 just for tyres.

so there is still about 80 - 90 tred on all 4, went over them.


I was thinking gold but wasnt sure if it would look tacky.. or not n e one done theres in gold, or got a pic of someones ?

I think it was mattp who also has a Fairmont in Sparkling Burgundy and he has painted his calipers gold. I think they were Tickford upgrades too. Looks great.

now for the time and efort of taking the brakes off :S

You dont need to take the brakes off to paint them. Theres a tutorial either here or on aufalcon.com on how to paint them without removing them from the cars. Basically using plastic bags to mask everything up. All you need to do is remove the wheel. Have a search for it.

Should look great brad, sounds like a good pick up. Which GT rims are they, the ones with the slot at the top or the later ones? Either way, you can't go wrong.
When I originally painted my series 1 brakes blue I did them on the car, just used a wire brush to clean them up, then a rub with some solvent cleaner, tape and bag everything and spray ~4 coats. If you do them gold, I recommend a coat of clear too, it really makes them shine a lot more, and adds durability too I guess. When I changed to the gold I painted the rears on the car too. Saves a lot of mucking around.

ok so here are the pics on the new rims on my girl. two things first of all
1) - i needs a wash badly haha
2) - i want it lower now looks high

haha would be suprised how many ppl say take the pin stripe off, but last time i had to get n e body work done to the car it was going to cost like nearly 100 just to take the stripe off

n e one know another way ?

Go to a paint supply store, or a body shop, and ask for a Nylon wheel. It fits into a drill, just turn it slowly, and apply light pressure to the pinstripe. It should take it off no troubles, just dont go too fast. Someone at the shop may even be able to give you a few pointers.

Here's the post that i found, that i used to remove the decals off my ute (intech, supercab). Worked well and should be the same for the pin stripe.

as above i used this method for removing stickers of my car just make sure you dont get it to hot or you will hurt the paint....its pretty easy to do really then give it a good polish and no will eva know they were on there....

i knew some ppl have problems with hitting the guard... wasnt expectiong to be one of them,
ne one know how 2 fit it ?

i wanna fix it a.s.a.p due to not wantng it to rip my tyre with the edge

ok well i just went out in the rain and used my tyre changer thingo the one that un does the wheel nut.. wheel nut wrench thats the word i think im looking for, and leaverd it up against my tyre gently and pushed up and wll.. it worked, its not 100% but ill have a better go 2moro and see if i can fit it or make the gaurds rolled more then they are

Depends on how well you do it!

Think of it this way, if you dent the car, you can fill it with bog and spray it yourself, which will "do the job", or you can pay a panelbeater to do it neatly. Make sense?

Hey mate, you can paint the calipers while they're on, but you'll get a better job taking them off..

With the pinstripe the hairdryer is a good method, but dont use turps or thinners, use tolulene as it wont damage the paint.

With the gaurds, you can get a block of wood and some cardboard (so it doesn't damage the paint) get a mate to hold it against the outside of the gaurd, and you can belt the inside of the gaurd with a gimpy. Just make sure your mate is putting pressure ecactly where you're belting the inside of the gaurd to prevent warping the gaurd. It's not hard, we do it everytime we have to replace a gaurd on the race car.
