Hmm.. does that car still exist on display somewhere? The interior looks so much like the Territory.
Guess thats where holden got the crewman idea from.. |

Well considering the shocking sales that Holden experienced with the Crewman, in hindsight it's probably quite good they didn't pursue this.
The dedicated crew cabs give any of these 4 door utes a run for their money. |

i seen this ute at the Brisbane motor show . it was a great looking machine and very popular.
i believe that ford oz were very keen to build it along side of the new wagon which we now know as the "Territory" however they had to get the final ok from USA head office . and head office would only approve one new model, so ford oz had to chose between the ute or the wagon, and the wagon won.

Ford tested the waters with the R5 which alluded to design cues from the upcoming BA Falcon, and even though it was very popular the R7/Territory concept generated a lot more excitement (and history shows it was exactly what the doctor ordered)
When Holden released their 2 pronged AWD attack on the market with the Adventra wagon and Crewman ute I though Ford Oz were screwed, good onthem for hitting the nail right on the head. |

Did'nt think much of the yellow thing. Loved the Territory and The Terra ute. Pic of my daughter next to Terra, she's about 5'2. Its a nice height for a Falcon ute.

If only ford put that front end on the AU maybe things would have been different.
Also will ford ever stick the Territory awd under the ute and bring back the rtv with awd, would be bloody handy for farmers and tradies etc. I know if you want a 4wd you get the ranger but they are not the same size etc. just seems like it would be really handy to have a falcon ute with awd. |

The R5 was designed by Scott Strong the man responsible for the BA. Scott then went back to the U.S but came in at the later stages of the FG design process and put the fininishing touches on the FG XR series. If your a fan of his work, from what I've read he's the one who'll be designing any updates we'll see on the F series Falcons over the next few years.

A soft roader suv which IMO isnt anything special (maybe soon with the diesel powerplant on the way...) replacing a agressivley styled 4by ute!
still madness to me!! ..Keeping in mind issues like legroom and such... the Terri was clearly the way to go. Alot more market in the SUV world. At least a custom order R5 would have been tops. |

Here's a couple of the concept utes from Ford Discovery Centre I got pics of when I was there in March:
Plus I remember years ago as a kid seeing the sandfire at the Adelaide Motor Show. Even had a poster of it up in my bedroom for ages (which I probably still have rolled up somewhere!).

The sandfire was alot better in person, side pipes and a wild colour. I dont recall the canopy being up at the show.
That and the predator were great looking cars, im surprised no ones made a copy of the El yet (that Ive seen). Like others said R5 was a great idea but the expense of the car vs sales would be a disaster.

The R7 Territory concept was nuts crazy mean looking, much moreso than the R5. The Territory was a much smarter choice, it still sells well even after 5-6 years on the market with minimal upgrades. The R5 wouldve quickly gone the way of the Crewman.
