Default Rear wheel bearing change

Hi All.

Had a crack at removing the rear stub axles from my Mk. 2 Escort on the weekend. Managed to remove all the bolts I needed to, but found it friggin' impossible to pull out the axle. Didn't want to start hitting it with anything harder than a copper hammer, the manual suggested some form of slide- hammer be attached to the 4 protruding bolts.

I had a look around for a tool to do the job, but all of the usual retailers were useless (I'm looking at YOU, SuperCheap) or told me it would take a few weeks to order something in.
Anyone have any time- and budget- friendly suggestions for dislodging the rear stub axles?

I used to use an old wheel spacer with a bar welded across it - then gently give it a tap with a hammer if it wouldnt come out by pulling, usually once you have cracked them they will come out

I use the old brutal method of flipping an old rear brake drum over, bolt it on backwards and beat the crap out of it.

yep,or a wheel loosely bolted up,and use it as a slid hammer.

Rubber mallet worked for me. I have bought a sliding hammer from supercheap for about $15 a few week ago but haven't tried it yet.

Try the reversed drum method with a mallet to prevent damage or the loose wheel should work well too. I had more trouble sliding the new bearing in since the oring slightly protrudes...had to beat the crap outta it.

A slide hammer or jack it out with two bolts, the threaded part protruding through the stud holes ( remove the studs first) the head pushing against the axle. Forget flogging it with a hammer, it damages the hammer!

Two bolts thru the holes in the flange for the axle keeper plate, with big washers between flange and casing to push against. Works but fiddly.

OR...

Slide hammer from a handyman dent puller kit. (picked mine up at a swap meet at Cootamundra years ago). Just need a piece of angle iron with drilled holes to fit over the wheel studs, with the slide hammer thru a centred hole to pull against. Works a treat.
