Blinkers and parkers constantly on

Sieries 1 dual fuel wagon.
Travelling down the freeway to sydney I got a burning smell in the car.
Right blinker started to light up, then the left one. Flasher relay was ticking when blinkers and hazards were turned on, lights stayed on when the relay was pulled, so it's not that.
Turned the car off when we got to Sydney and found the parkers on as well.
Found the right tail light was "nudged" out of place when we checked the relay on the freeway but didn't find any broken or loose wires that would cause a short.
Mate said maybe smartlock has died.
Any ideas that would short both parkers and blinkers before I start pulling this thing apart?

The brake and parker bulb has two filaments, sometimes one filament can break and short out to the other good filament. I've read on this forum that this can cause all sorts of strange things like what your saying. So check those first. Doesn't explain the burning smell though. The fuse should blow before anything starts melting/burning.

It may be that a harness has rubbed through on a bolt etc and has shorted - that would also explain the burning smell.

It could be a common earth (ie negative lead to some metal on the car) that has lost contact.

The Current then leaks back through all the other things that were also earthed at that place.
This will be evidenced by some of the lights that are on running at lower intensity than usual.

tow bar plug wiring can sometimes cause grief, something else to investigate.
