Default Ford Emmisions laws + engine replacement

Hello All,

Can someone explain the details surrounding the Ford Emissions laws and engine replacement\upgrade etc.

And how they would affect a person putting say a 6.0 or 5.4ltr engine into their 4.0ltr falcon.

Or if anyone could point me to somewhere that I could find out what these Emissions laws are and what they limit you to.

Cheers

basically, if the car is older than the engine, the vehicle must comply to the emissions laws from the year of manufacture of the engine.

is the car is newer than the motor, the vehicle must comply to the emissions laws from the year of the manufacture of the car.

lost yet?

an example, say your au falcon is a 2000 model. if you put a 2006 model engine in it, you must meet the emissions standard for 2006, being euro3, which means you need all the anti pollution gear that the car the motor came out of had on it.

if you drop a motor from say an eb xr8, say it's a 1992 model, then the motor must comply to the emissions laws that were current in the year 2000, because that's when the car was built.

make any more sense?

no, people run older engines on LPG because they pass emissions easier

So what governs crate motors for example 347 crate motor or 351 crate motor what are the laws for them since they didn't come from a particular car

depends on the year of manufacture of the engine, as above. i'm assuming by crate motor you mean getting one from the us to bolt it? if that's the case, you would have to comply with the emissions standard of the year the engine was built. so if it was from this year you would have to comply to euro4 as that's the current standard. that's why a lot of people throw them on lpg, as it's easier to comply.

not saying it can't be done, it just won't be cheap by any stretch of the imagination. you would obviously need euro4 compliant cats and someone to tune the ecu that is able to adjust the maps as required for the emissions tests you would have to go through to get it regoed.

If you are using the engine from a particular year, but the ECU that came with that model of car (ie a donor car of the same year), would that work?

i don't see why not, as long as the emissions meet whatever is required by the epa it shouldn't matter what ecu you use. on that note, say you throw a bf motor into an au, if you use the bf ecu and cats there is no reason it shouldn't pass without any tuning as the factory tune would comply anyway. you would still have to get it tested though, as that motor was never offered from the factory in that car

with a crate motor you may get away with using a stock ecu and getting it edited to suit

well if you use the same intake and exhaust and the car is in the same state of service then it would be running exactly as it was in the donor car meaning if that car would have passed then so would the transplant car
no reason for the ecu to drastically change the tune if all the sensors are fine and its getting the same amount of air in/out so the factory tune reset should be fine im guessing

in theory that's right, but just remember, this is the australian gov't we are talking about here. nothing they do makes sense...

you'd really have to check with the epa about it..
