Well my trusty XR 8 developed a slight miss a week ago so gave it a bit of a birthday at the weekend before the Cruise to Haddys museum & Rod shop Plugs Oils ext, Seemed to be running ok but started emptying the header tank a few times along the way So thought I mite investigate a bit further tonight after work It would appear that Tickfords Hector M.Built 13sec stocky Wheeser has had a head gasket let go Only has 100800ks on the clock but you get that. looks like another how to coming soon
Shed already has the Cortina in it getting ready for next month so room is at a premium I would imagine this is how I would have looked if I didn't give up the smoke 10 years ago Will give some update along the way soon as I finish stripping her down

Is it possible to use a real cheap engine oil as well as an additive?
You may have to do it a few times at the least to flush it all out. You know you could have brought it to the new man cave and done it here. I'm sure the T2 would'nt mind giving up it's bed for a fellow AU. |

I look forward to the how to as mine has been pushing the water out of the header tank.
I don't have any sludge in the rocker covers so I am driving it until it shows up which side is crook. Why was it so gunky in the inlet manifold? Was the inlet manifold easy to remove? Good luck with the repair. If you are doing it on the weekend I wouldn't mind coming over to watch and get a few hints. |

Thanks Austin I think thats the way to go, I have a sneeky suspicion that the Vally gasket went as 3 of the 6 bolts were loose as it has never been off it must have been a factory option but as its apart now mite as well do the lot to make sure

Hmm does this mean you lose the title of 'unopened' V8?!
You know these things go better with a bit of porting of the manifold...........

Ahh that sucks mate :(
just clean out as much gunk as you can, pull lifters and give em a good soak in thinners or the like, when you get it back together go for a nice long drive and keep it warm for an hour or more. Get out the oil change kit while it's still hot and drain the sump ang should remove all the gunk. I've seen worse. I would pull the cam angle sensor and use a drill to run the oil pump and flush the oil galleries with fresh oil before you start her again too. Or..... 347ci will fix it as the others have mentioned

Easy - show her the GT40P's in their current condition, they are 'unusable' and AFR's are cheaper than GT40P's from Ford.

Whoosha, sorry to see her in that sort of condition. But I imagine the bearings would not have liked that sludge too much. How many hours running do you think it did in this condition? I would be careful as to how harsh of a solvent you use as this will also be very unkind to seals if the engine is staying in.
On the subject of your inlet manifold bolts, after a month after I purchased mine new I went round and rechecked sump bolts, manifold bolts etc etc, some were virtually finger tight after the settling of the gaskets, so it would be no surprise. Good luck with whatever you decide, if you need an extra hand on the spanners, I am only up the road. -Craig |

BUGGER ! i feel for ya, i had a diesel cylander liner go porous , the coolant water pretty much filled the engine,it looked a bit worse than yours, i don`t know what the proper procedure is to get rid of the gunk but it was a hell of a mess, but i spent forever it seemed like dismantling the engine and cleaning the crap off parts, from memory a pressure washer followed by degreaser and lots of rags, good luck with what ever direction you go.

Put fresh cheap oil mix with diesel like 60% oil 40% diesel with the old filter let it run for about 10 mins or till operating temp reached don't rev it though. While it is hot drain the oil for long as possible change the filter should be all good after that. I have seen people use just diesel as oil but I think that is too thin. Do it twice if you feel like you need to but I have found once is enough.
