Ford 6spd Autos, Your Experience: Poll

Just Looking at upgrading to a territory with the 6spd auto, and sure the horror stories are out there, but compared to the total number of these boxes out there how bad could it be?

And posting your Klms could be helpful

Had an FG XR8 up to 70000km and it had the 'clunk' back to 1st gear when coming to a stop sometimes but that was it.

FG XR6T that got to about 25000km with no issues and now a GS 315 with about 25000km and no issues.

Should point out that the clunk to first gear is actually driveline shunt not the trans itself? I could be wrong though. I thought it has something to do with the diff and diff cradle.

2006 TTG 191,000 no problems.
had gear box flushed by ford dealer at 100,000, and will have it done again at 200,000 km.
flush cost $600 but i consider it small in comparison to cost of gear box.

93 odd k's on my 6 speeder BF Ghia. Assuming it hasn't had a service (I'm owner No:2) box appears to do all it's asked of and if your not driving it, it would be hard to pick a gear change. Do however intend to do a box service shortly. Will be interesting to see the 'before' and 'after' fluid colours and box behaviour after the service.

56,000km and no issues. Have towed a caravan aswell. I always thought the ZF takes off in 2nd unless you put the foot down and then it kicks back to 1st.

85,000km. There were a few rough shifts. Had it looked at and was down 2.5L on ATF for some reason. All good after a top up!

BF XR8 ute 6sp ZF with 163000k's. Box has never been touched and I think it got driven hard by the previous owner.

in FG every time you come to a complete stop, the gearbox will select 1st. taking off from standstill will be 1st everytime. i believe the calibration for BF may have been slightly different.

2006 BF XR6t, driven the way its supposed to be driven. 90,000kms without touching the gearbox. Still smooth as ever. Not a single problem. But I'm getting it flushed at the 100,000k mark just for peace of mind.

Well its looking good so far, I must say its one thing that spooks me about looking at second hand Falcons. We ask for all this tech but it does come at a cost.

Thumbs up for the ZF..but yeah, Im a manual bloke until i physically cant.

2008 FG G6 approaching 117,000 km on the clock and no issues (that I have picked up on anyway). Doubt the previous owner had anything done to it, but I did buy it with 60,000 km on the clock, so it is possible.

Couldn't be happier with it.

Bought my SY Territory AWD with 133000km on the clock. Gearbox was fine, but didn't want the heat exchanger to bust and spoil the party. So at 138000km I had the trans serviced with a flush, new steel pan and filters and a bypass cooler system to take the factory heat exchanger out of the system. Has performed fine and have done around 7000km with it without an issue. When they dropped the oil they said it looked like new and there was no metal shavings on the collection magnet, so I think I've got a very good box, which will never overheat or get water in it.

very late 2010 50th Anniversary G6E bought brand new in February last year.

No issues...does occasionally seem to mis-guess what I'm about to do and change either up or down a gear when I suddenly have to do something different to what I was doing a second ago, such as in traffic where, say, you began to accelerate but instead had to quickly brake and change lanes or something, but it very rapidly goes "oops, sorry 'bout that boss", and changes properly to a suitable gear.
On the highway it's great...very smooth operation, cruise control on up and down some big hills, and it doesn't flog down a few gears sharply like the automatic '04 5 speed Landcruiser we had previously, or the 4 speed auto VX-II Lumina we had before that. If it does kickdown a gear, you hardly notice unless you are looking at the tacho.

12 months ownership and 36,000-odd kilometers, mostly highway use and some stop start city stuff here and there, and no problems. Couldn't be happier!

Interestingly I seem to be able to feel it do this rarely now and then...I'll come to a complete stop reasonably quickly, say at a set of lights that has just changed, and as I sit there at a standstill, a second or two later it can be felt, very slightly, to sort of "go into gear".

Mine has covered 114k without a drama, I did have the oil and pan changed at around 80k just for piece of mind. These stories of water contamination do make me nervous, I don't like the thought of spending $3k+ for a replacement. I am still very surprised there isn't a 100% fix for the contamination issue with a separate cooler that won't upset the ZF's electronics.

XR6T BFII, I bought it new and sold id with over 100k of hard kays. Trans never missed a beat

Not sure - when I mentioned it in the FG issues thread I was pointed to http://www.thelurch.com/lurching_zf_transmission.htm

It was only an issue on my 08 XR8 and I've read on here it's about it learning your driving style and how it will come back etc. but thankfully I've not had it on my 09 XR6T nor my 10 GS.

280rwkw. 100,000kms no worries at all. Awesome gearbox, so much better than the sloppy 4-speed.

My BF also selects 1st everytime you stop unless you are driving it manually. Then it will take off in second
