Default [The Age] Diesel exhaust causes lung cancer: WHO report

Richard Blackburn

June 13, 2012 - 10:39AM

Exhaust from diesel engines causes lung cancer, a World Health Organisation agency said for the first time, citing a review of studies.
Diesel exhaust also was linked to an increased risk of bladder cancer, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, based in Lyon, France, said in a statement today. The group published the findings after a review over eight days by a panel of scientists. An earlier review, in 1988, classified diesel engine exhaust as "probably carcinogenic."

The finding is alarming for Australia, as sales of diesel-powered vehicle have more than doubled – from 110,608 to 266,886 – between 2005 and 2011. That figures doesn't include heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses, which are almost exclusively powered by diesel.

Most of the growth has come from European manufacturers including Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, who are selling increasing numbers of diesel-powered passenger cars. Sales of diesel-powered passenger cars have grown six-fold since 2005, albeit off a low base.

Australian petrol cars are just as dirty/polluting ... hell we are still stuck in the EURO 4 days when the rest of the developed world has moved on to much tougher standards ...

I'm taking that article with a pinch of salt. Just hope the extra salt doesn't cause cancer.

It's good to see our newspapers (not) publishing a balanced report, like the amount of Diesel vehicles, population and landmass in Europe compared to same in Oz !

All exhaust emissions would be carcinogenic in high enough concentrations. Jeez

Regardless whether this is true or not diesel vehicles are going to harder and harder to design and manufacturer as air pollution laws get tighter. This is why I don't believe in all the calls for Falcon to go diesel.

Cos nitrogen dioxides and carbon dioxides are the same thing? Or black smoke just equals bad? Or clean diesel = associated with dirty diesel? Ok, I am just struggling with this one.

People are aware that since unleaded was first used, in other countries (especially Europe) at least, they have severe warnings on the petrol pumps saying don't breathe the fumes, don't let it contact bare skin, don't use it to wash parts, don't use it in any vehicle or machine without a catalytic converter (eg: mowers, whipper snippers, old cars, etc), because of the cancer risk from the additives that replaced lead...

Motorbike magazines also warned years ago that remember as you sit in traffic sucking fumes from the cars in front, that the cat converter doesn't actually operate until it reaches operating temperature, and until then the gases being emitted are far worse than a bit of lead...

None of it is good stuff to breathe...

Well that's bad for me then because when I deliver fuel I have to stand by the vapour outlet and I am always breathing it in :(

The Age forgot to finish it off by saying. Very recently Ford Australia added a diesel to their popular locally made SUV, the Territory, so that it could increase profits by killing off Australian residents with lung cancer.

In all seriousness though. Time to rethink an LPi Territory Ford. Better for the air, better for the wallet, better for production numbers.

I wonder how many people smoke in this country?

LPi Territory would be good if it had 100L usable. Tank supply would be the big issue there.

Watching Nine News as I'm reading this thread. Just came on that inhaling spray taning spray causes lung cancer. Customers are advised to wear masks while the tan is applied.

Lets face it .... living causes cancer.

Put the word 'World' in a 'Organisation' and everything it says is big news. If its as effective for health as NATO is for world peace, we're screwed.

On a lighter note, since diesel is the new evil maybe I should opt for that nice clean Coyote V8 rather than that nasty cancer causing diesel in the Ranger
