GGN25R Hilux MY07. Tell me about 'em.

Now that the XR8 is no longer in the driveway I am looking for a suitable replacement for it and Hiluxes are high on the list. I have one at the moment that I am looking seriously at and it's a GGN25R MY07 model, SR5 auto 4L V6 petrol. Would love a diesel but the budget wont allow for anything that doesn't have 200,000+ kms so its unlikely I will get one.

I have had a Hilux as a work vehicle before but not a high ride model so just wondering if there's anything in particular I should look for. The one I am looking at is a 4WD but it's not essential to me to have, auto is a must because it will be a work vehicle and it will also tow quite often.

Anybody got any advice or opinions?

My step dad had an auto diesel 2007 SR5 model. Owned it from new, sold it 6 months ago with 120,000kms on it. Injectors needed replacing at 40,000kms ($9k job out of warranty) and the rear diff bearings needed replacing at 110,000kms ($2.5k job). Obviously the petrol version won't have the same injector problems (you would hope), but it still gets the woeful 4 speed tansmission. It does an okay job, but ultimately needs another cog or 2. The car itself rides okay, but it's very noisy and as an actual car, is better at being a truck. He did a bit of towing with it, and while the engine was adequate for loads of up to about 2 tonne, the transmission let the engine down greatly, always wanting to unlock the torque convertor at the slightest hint of an incline, which would send the noise meter through the roof.

In my opinion, Hilux's are very over rated. I'm sure there are other cars in that category you could get with more features, less KMs and a better drivetrain.

Edit: Almost forgot, the petrol will be horrendously thirsty too.

You are right, I've owned two petrol Hiluxes, an 82 and an 85
both 2L an 18R and 3Y, gutless and guzzled fuel

But the at least with the 4L V6 it has the power, as much as most cars and more than the V8 in the Landcruiser, but is does like to drink fuel. Which is why they are a lot cheaper than the T/Diesel

As for there being better utes out there.......... why are they not outselling almost every car on the market like the hilux?
Was it second place after the Mazda 3?

I had an 05 extra cab 5 speed auto V6 as a work ute for about 5 years and I actually found it to be very good on fuel. I'm not so worried about this part because of my experiences with that vehicle. Power was never an issue either, had plenty for a work hauler.

The diesels are just stupidly dear with way too many kms for me to even consider.

Yeah it's a shame they cost so much here. yet in a whole lot of other countries they are the same price as petrols

Mate of mine bought an 07 SR5 T/Diesel 6 months ago, cost him $37,000
Petrols were $10,000 or so less

Nissan Navara or Mitsu Triton also worth a look. Then there's always a brand new Great Wall (laugh only after you've tried one)

I had a 2008 petrol SR5 Manual 4wd, for 3yrs, and we have at least 8 others at work, the fuel bill wasnt as bad as I expected considering the way I drive.

The only issue we have had is at 100,000km or so the fuel pumps allow fuel to leak back so they have to crank another revolution or two before they start but once started there is no issue that's all we have done.although I have heard front wheel bearing are $1200 per side.

I have driven the equalavent Nissan and they are not in the same ball park although they are cheaper to buy in the first place. I also hate the look of the Mitsubishi so never driven or looked at one.

I have driven a Great Wall, a relo has one and I had to put a CD player in one. Never will I drive one again. Utter junk.

A D40 Navara was very high on the list but I would never buy a manual one (clutch issues) and they are fairly dear as well. I wouldn't buy a petrol one either which rules out probably 60% of the ones in my budget on carsales.

I dont find the Tritons ugly but the ones I have driven I have found it very difficult to get comfortable in. The floor seems to be quite high to the point where I couldn't sit properly.

I've been driving company Hilux's for 6.5 years now..
Doing approx 140,000km a year with them.
Most have been diesel, but I did have an 07 Dual Cab 4x4 4.0 V6 for a year and it was a great ute.
Fuel wise wasn't too bad at all and considering it spent most of the day off road, it took all the punishment I dished out well.
No clutch or gearbox problems, no diff problems, engine never used oil.

It was always serviced every 10,000km and we changed fuel and air filters every service, so it's economy stayed consistent.

Now obviously, all of mine have been manual due to the fact that everyday we are four wheel driving, often using low range for the really tough stuff.

An auto will not get you as great economy, but, it does come down to the way you drive it..

I've had an 06 SR5 dualcab 2wd 4.0 auto for 3 1/2 yrs now, I came out of an au and ba to it as I needed the rear seat for junior. Got it with 60k on it and it now has 170k on it. Took a while to get used to the chassis judder and flex due to it's design compared to the stiffer car like ride/handling of the falcon but apart from that it's probably the best car I've owned. Very few annoying silly glitches like you get with a well used ford or holden product. Goes great, I've got mine on vapour lpg injection so fuel use isn't an issue. During the time I've had it I've added 19' Kluger rims, softened and lowered the rear springs which made the ride and grip in the wet so much better. Apart from routine servicing all I have had to do is a waterpump and front disc rotors. On the topic of brakes the 2wd is under braked as it uses much smaller hardware than the 4wd and adding the 19 wheels didn't help there either. Yes, Toyota's are 'vanilla' but after years of fords, holdens and modified cars one has to live with one long term to appreciate how good they are as a day to day machine. Hope this helps.

Had some spare time today so I took an 08 Triton GLXR for a drive. I had previously ruled them out but thought I'd give them another chance, shouldn't have bothered. The height of the floor makes it so hard to get comfy and I couldn't warm to the dash layout, very messy IMO. So no go for a Triton.

I am making further enquiries about the SR5 I linked to above but assuming it all checks out it looks like a goer.

Anything fuel system related on common rail diesel engines is going to be expensive, they push over 2000 PSI of pressure through them.

I got quoted over $900 each for factory injectors in my Focus.

Fitting a set of extractors gets rid of that annoying ticking sound that the old log manifolds create and gives better power and slight economy.

The rattle sound, we had on one fixed with shims under warranty by Toyota,

There has been quite a lot of the old Nigerian scammers doing the rounds with 4WDs of late
Advertising 4WDs with stolen pics and quite low prices, usually no phone contact, email only and they say they are out of the country or interstate and want to do the sale via the net and include "Shipping"

Other driver at work was looking at one for his SIL as it was supposed to be located a few streets from him, but it never was

05-07 D40 Navara's are terrific.

I've an 05 Diesel stx and love it.

Comfy, has balls and pretty good on fuel, I'm not sure about the petrol model though.

Just had it's (major) 80,000km service and no issues apart from lazy seatbelt retractor...

As for looking at a great wall? Well if you're comfortable driving round in a 2 star ancap rated vehicle, then feel free.

I know you didn't mention it, but someone above did.

And I realise anything pre 2011 in a 4wd ute was poor anyway...but 2 is just terrible!

Putting it into perspective, the 05 RX navara only had driver and passenger airbags as an option and no ABS and it managed a 3 star rating...

Petrol D40's are like running a Boss 290.. Got a mate with a RWD Stx auto petrol. It was cheap at the time to buy but we all know why now.... Needed fair amount of warranty too, diff, plastics and a full set of wheels....

Stay away from v6 Hilux. They rattle like a second hand lawn mower after a few Kay's!!!
