Grab a diesel power magazine off the shelf and have a browse through the adverts, they have triple turbo setups for Ford Powerstroke V8s, Cummins 5.9s and GM Duramax 6.6L engines.
Interesting for a factory setup though. That torque figure, wowee, that would be awesome to drive, 100km/h in top gear you could blow the rear tyres off I reckon haha. Interesting it revs so high as well, my TDCI Focus drops off torque at around 3000 RPM, then by 3500 RPM she's really struggling, from 3500 RPM to redline at 4300 RPM it takes probably more than a second to get there and its basically doing nothing but struggling and screaming. Any more and I reckon my pistons would be half way to the moon. |

Where does it end ? Surely putting 3.5 bar of boost pressure (52 p.s.i.) and with the complexity of 3 turbo's longevity and maintenance costs are going to be problematic.
Makes a good single turbo or supercharged petrol look like a maintenenace dream and that's saying something... |

Diesel turbo is a bit different to petrol turbo, they tend to take a lot higher boost, but use smaller turbos.
Factory boost on my Focus is 16 psi. Remember a diesel engine is a hell of a lot more robust than a petrol engine too. Also anything diesel is more expensive for parts than a petrol engine. I guess someone who can afford to buy, and insure one of these cars wouldn't be too worried about maintenance costs. |

Check what boost some diesels run..
Our old Cat turbo V8 marine engine was detuned and run 22Lb boost.. Being a charter boat it had to be detuned below 300 h.p.. From memory it run over 30 PSI std... tuning Injector pump and fitting wastegate to control boost / power..

pretty impressive having all that torque on tap and being able to get a claimed 6.3L/100km on the combined European consumption cycle, it will be interesting to see if lasts.

last time i looked at a merc in australia. The dealer told me out right. this car will sit on 240km/h all day. i'm like. Hardly relevant mate. No roads in australia are even suitable for that speed regardless of speed limites.

^^ Yes good point, I recall the twin D6 Volvo 310 horsepower 5.5. litre engines we have in our boat we own a share of are running a boost pressure of 2 bar, about 29 p.s.i. at normal cruise revs. Not sure what the boost pressure is at full throttle, but would be much higher... will try that out when I take it out next time.
That same single turbo D6 engine goes out to ratings of 425 horsepower in supercharged and turbo charged format so I wonder what the boost pressure is then I guess the point is these engines have huge reserves of cooling, (sea water), through heat exchangers are made of cast iron and are designed to take the loads with built in reserves e.g. sump capacity is 20 litres of oil. As others have noted, few if any who buy a car like this will know or care. They'll just enjoy the driving experience, which you'd want to do the way Euro cars depreciate which is very scary. |

We have been brain washed.. I have driven 3 times across U.S and the speed there most do is 80 to 95 MPH on open roads.. They are not any better than here..
I don't understand the critics of diesel power... They power race sports cars and win with ease.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBKZ71tpbp4
