Caravans suitable for Falcon

What make/model of caravans are suitable to be pulled by an FG XR6T with Heavy Duty towbar (2200kg?)? Would like to know if there are any that are self-contained (shower/toilet)?

Hello, parents bought a Windsor Genesis GC636sx twin leaf sprung axle van. Has a dry weight of 1780kgs, sleeps 4. One double bed, one bunk that can fold and double as a seat. Has a kitchen, shower and toilet. Has an 80L water tank, twin gas bottles, on board gas hot water, 3 way fridge, microwave, two speaker stereo and fold down legs all standard. I (AC was optional, also had ours lifted, unsure about the annex, think that was standard too) Its a great van! We've loaded it up and taking it through the outback aswell and its faultless. An FG turbo wouldn't blink at it! Parents use a BFII wagon fitted with a HD tow bar. Wasn't an overly expensive van aswell which is great.

Mate, that looks amazing. How much did one of them cost?

We went to the QLD caravan show recently, Lunagazer was one of the lightweights, but like any specialist you pay bigger bucks. I know there was another one so I will go looking now. Adria is another one here in QLD but I cant get the site to work.

Thanks haha. We got it for $45k with the air con and lift kit at the Sydney caravan show near the end of last year. Should still be under 50k these days though.

Just to nitpick, but the HD towpack has a tow rating of 2.3 tonne, not 2.2.

Just be careful, I think the Turbos have a lower towing rateing than the nat. asperated!!!!!

And I also got told by titan ford here in WA, that the xrs and fpv sedans are limted to 1600kg due to body kit. Dunno if it fact or fiction though

Aussie car and an aussie van driving wherever..doesn't get much better than that!

A little off topic I know but with the increase in size of vans and the demands for more luxury items in them ( showers loos TVs ) the weight of these vans often exceeds the towing rate of the falcon and commodore and this is before the water tank is filled or the cupboards are loaded with our must have items ,don't forget the weight of the full esky and people in the tow vehicle must be accounted for as well .
As I am currently at week 6 of an 8 week journey towing a Jayco Expanda up the centre and across to the east coast heading home to Vic I see many overloaded vehicles and have thought that the relevant RTA should really take the scales out and weigh a few cars towing vans because I really believe many van towing folk would be in for a very big surprise indeed .
IMHO I also feel that it is this increase in van size that may have contributed to the decrease in sales of the big Aussie cars as they are no longer rated to tow these vans .

Manuals yes but the Auto is 2300.

Don't know about these days, but when my dad was looking at them in 2003, the GT was rated at 1600, and the XR8 was 2300 (both autos).

a lot of things are being checked now......I got pulled over in Vic not long ago and got a warning about non rated "D" shackles

they also had a set of mobile scales on board so weight checking will occur

also watch out if you fit another water tank, remember 1 litre of water = 1 kilo of weight

the towball weight must be watched as we put an extra gas bottle or box on the drawbar

watch the overhang past the last axle if you mount a carry rack or bikes of fuel containers

tyre ratings and pressures were checked

the vehicle loading must be taken into account.....more weight in car = less weight you can legally tow

all this was checked at my stop by the road traffic mob.......luckily he wasn't an ******** or I would have been stuck like others I've heard of that have been made to leave the van there

Too many people make the basic mistake of being dazzled by the massive fully self contained vans that weigh a ton.

Tow something that is as light as you can get away with, and sit on the speed limit for christs sake (if your state allows). As an old guy at work says: "You've already stuffed your fuel economy by putting the van on the back, why not use a little extra and do the damn speed limit and not **** everyone off?"

We'll be picking up an old van from a guy I work with in a few months time (his daughters boyfriend is staying with them while he works in the mines). It's only about 14 feet long (if that), pop top, and is pretty basic, but weighs only 750kg.

I wouldn't mind a van but I would not pull it behind a Falcon.... Would use our Territory Diesel or even better the BT-50 which is rated at 3350kg....

our van is nudging the 1800 kilo mark loaded and the falcon handles it extremely well

the weight of the ford and the vehicle balance do actually make for a very good tow vehicle

Remember also that a wagon or ute will tow better than a sedan due to leaf spring rear end.

I have towed a tandem full of bricks with both a AU wagon and a Mitsubishi Triton. The ease at which the diesel triton pulled the load means I no longer question the high sales of dual cab utes in this country.

the falcon tows pretty good, even the slightest throttle opening see`s 3 or 4 ton gcm moving off the line pretty easy, absolutely wrapped with the way my irs equipped AU XR (6) tows, it is rock steady on the road, i`d almost go one step further and say i would prefer it to my old f100, it`s that good !,
a later model with the 6 speed auto and lower 1st gear and more ratio`s would really kick butt i reckon, you could tow just about anything within reason if it`s loaded well, about the only thing missing is ground clearance for the rough stuff, although The-Interceptors photo`s seem to handle it no worries.
