Slow news day sounds like a made up story the only thing they will share is the name and couldn`t wait to talk about the demise of the Ford product..... Blah blah blah

Yes, because the name is trademarked. Typical drivel from Drivel.

As if the name 'Falcon' even come up in a Bentley marketing brainstorm session, let alone getting past that stage...

Read about this on CarBuzz...

How do we know that Ford will still be using the Falcon name by the time this SUV is produced (provided VW gives clearance for it at all)
Would they allow Bentley to use it if the Falcon is dead?

Cool Re: The new Falcon may be a Bently - so the article says.

Is Falcon a trademark name?
or is it a bird like Mustang is a horse
or Coevette was a navy war boat
we could go on
just about every car name came from somewhere else
still just a filler from drive when it hasnt even been approved
by the VW company
thanks John

Ford own the trademark for the Falcon name, and will continue to have that even if they stop making the Falcon. The trademark rights continue on for a number of years before they either have to re-use it or they lose it.

The 93 Mustang Cobra was solely built so Ford could keep the rights to the Cobra name, they either used the Cobra name or lost it, so the guys who went on to form SVT came up with the Mustang Cobra to keep the name in use.

This is one of the dumbest articles ever written. Drive have sunk to a new low. Looks just like an excuse to bring up the Falcon is dead story once again. Scumbags.

And as if Bentley would want to call this abortion on wheels a Bentley Falcon. Sounds stupid. Its definately no Thundercougarfalconbird.

Bentley Falcon: Ford lawyers say ‘no’ to rumoured SUV name

Ford Australia’s legal team will block any attempts by Bentley to call its upcoming SUV the Falcon in our market if the British luxury marque selects the iconic nameplate for its controversial new model.

US publication Automobile Magazine reports the ‘Bentley Falcon’ moniker has been given the green light by the company’s product strategy team, and is set to adorn the production version of the brand’s first four-wheel drive.

The luxury SUV will draw inspiration from the Bentley EXP 9 F concept – the ‘F’ stands for ‘Falcon’ – that was unveiled earlier this year at the Geneva motor show.

But Ford says the Falcon name is off limits in Australia.

Ford Australia public affairs director Sinead Phipps relayed the advice of the company’s legal team, which said Bentley would not be permitted to sell the vehicle under the Falcon name down under.

“Name registration is in the ‘motor vehicle’ category, so even though it’s an SUV [and the Falcon is a passenger car] that wouldn’t make any difference here,” Phipps said.

The Ford Falcon is Australia’s longest surviving automotive nameplate, having launched in our market in 1960.

For its part, Bentley has made no official announcement about potential names for its future 4WD at this stage.

There have been similar cases in Australia in recent years where car makers have been forced to change model names because of clashes with other existing vehicles.

Fiat was forced to rename its Bravo small car ‘Ritmo’ in our market because the original name jarred with Mazda’s ute, while Chinese manufacturer Chery elected to call its city car the J1, as its usual A1 badge was already taken by Audi.

The Falcon model is TM'ed under Class 12 (Motor vehicles) here in Australia.

Ford dont have to keep using the TM if they keep paying the re-registration fees for the TM (here in Australia)

If the Falcon name is not TM'ed under an automotive catagory under whatever country Bentley sell the vehicle, then its fair game. Ford may have been caught naping by not TM'ing the Falcon name in other countries...

You'd have to imagine the US would be Bentley's biggest market, so if they can't use Falcon there it should be pretty clear they won't be able to use it at all.

Because the article is an Australian article.
