Default Veyron stripped of title due to technicality!

Owch.....

Quote:
The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is no longer officially the fastest car in the world.

The supercar – which has held the record for the world’s fastest production car since July 2010 - has been stripped of its title by the Guinness World Record team for ‘breaching the rules.’

The Guinness team has revealed the Bugatti that was tested, and subsequently set the record at 431km/h, was modified and hence not eligible.

The car in question had its speed restrictor deactivated – a key difference to the 30 Veyron Super Sports sold to the public.

Road going Super Sports are limited to ‘just’ 415km/h – something Bugatti claims is done for ‘safety reasons’.

''It has come to the attention of Guinness World Records that there was an oversight in its adjudication of the 'Fastest production car' which was set in 2010 by the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport,'' Jaime Strang, GWR's PR director, told UK paper the Sunday Times.

''As the car's speed limiter was deactivated, this modification was against the official guidelines. Consequently, the vehicle's record set at 431.072 kmh is no longer valid.

"Following this, Guinness World Records is reviewing this category with expert external consultants to ensure our records fairly reflect achievements in this field.''

The issue of Bugatti speed limiting its production cars was raised by top speed rival John Hennessey last week, after his car, the Venom GT, recorded 427.6km/h in Texas – a feat he is claiming makes the Venom GT the world’s fastest production car.

We’ll have to wait and see if the boffins at Guinness World Records agree.

Better to be safe than sorry, that extra 15km/h will mean you will come to a stop 5m sooner.....

sounds fair to me,
why limit them? not as if the owners going to test anyways.
or as you point out, stop 5mtr sooner.
get it wrong in any event it wont end well.

Maybe they have reliability concerns at that speed. It's only 15km/h, but at that speed it might be a big deal.

I don’t know (not owning one) but the limit may be a function of limiting engine revs, such that in top gear speed is limited to 415.

In any event, such records have long since ceased to have any relevance. Calling the Veyron a “production car” is nuts. I remember reading a little while back about a guy (In Germany I think) doing insane mods to the big Ferraris. If he sells more than 30, does that make his cars “production”?
It’s a great technical achievement, but they should be off on the Bonneville salt flats competing against the other speed freaks.

Yeah but you could argue that doing 15ks more would mean that you would have passed the scene of a potential accident therefore avoiding it! Lol

The Veyron would be bouncing off the rev limiter (6600rpm) at 431kph.

And that Venom GT is pathetic !

It's over 700kg lighter than the Bugatti, yet it can barely match it's top speed!

The tyres are the limit at these speeds. They are probably rated to 415 but above that its probably a bit of an unknown, hence why the production cars were limited to 415, even though they could go faster.

Maybe the record books should class production cars as those built from the ground up from real manufacturers, not mutant Lotus Elises by a guy who's got heaps of money who's been turbocharging vipers and corvettes over the last decade or so.

If memory serves me correctly, when Top Gear reviewed it, they said the tyres would last 12 minutes at that speed.

But that was ok because the fuel would only last 8 minutes.

Exactly my view, if anyone saw the thread about John Hennessey the other day, they'd know why.

Can't take out the competition by beating them, so he found away around it.

Ah, hang on. I just recalled there could be a precedent here.

Mark Skaife drove a Maloo in 2003 or 4 that set the record for the worlds fastest production utility or pickup or something. And it was something like an average between the two runs of 250kms an hour plus......

Weren't the VZ's & VYs limited to 180 or something? Pretty sure they were & that record was vetted by GWR.

I wonder how long Hennessy has know this & pulled it out just at the right time so his car, coincidentally of course, could become the record holder.

277.16 km/h and Z series HSVs were not speed limited, E series were the first.

Sour grapes. Not to worry, the SuperVeyron will easily get the record when it is released.

I remember when James May drove that one on Top Gear which was going to do something like 420 instead of 400kph. They were setting up all sorts of things and going over the car like a test flight of a new fighter jet.

The tyre guys were the interesting ones...they said the tyres would last, at 400kph, for X number of minutes...fifteen or twenty minutes I think. When asked how long they would last at 420kph, they thought for a moment and shrugged...who knew?

I wouldn't have been driving the thing at that speed...

That was a classic line! But he said the tyres would only last for about 15mins and the fuel runs out in 12 mins.

Here's the clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LO0PgyPWE3o

He starts his run at 5 mins and mentions the above lines at 6:35.

Only 4 Hennessey Venoms built since 2011...

Hardly a substancial amount of production...

I was thinking of buying a Veyron but there are too many school zones in my area to do 415 kmh. And the repayments are a bit much.

Have to stick with the Ford I guess.
