Interested to know how a car can be driven for a long period of time while being registered interstate. The vehicle in question has been around for 3 yrs and I see it regularly, bloody everywhere in fact. It is a early 70's celica in very average nick, sagging suspension and all.
Registered S.A , how do they get around it? I know through experience that in the past a car if garaged in QLD on a permanent basis had to be transferred to QLD rego after a certain time. Has the law changed? It really annoys me that some ex pat S.A can use our roads while not contributing a cent to revenue (I read somewhere apparently they don't speed). This one certainly doesn't 0-55 in what seems like a eternity. Just being a Queenslander an havin' a whinge! |

If you live in Qld you have 14 days from entering Qld to rego the interstate car here. Just done it with a car from WA.
Off course so long as you keep paying other states rego and never get pulled over or have an accident no one really checks. Problem will come if you injure someone and CTP insurance gets involved, then they MAY decide since you don't live in "their" state they wont pay. Then you need a good lawyer to define "where you live". Hundreds of grey nomads are doing this permanently, leaving car regoed at kids address etc, so long as bills/fines/tolls etc get paid govt doesn't care much. WA rego for 6cyl was $600ish and Qld was $800, I know where I would rego it if I could. Don't see why we cant have a national rego and license and road rules but that means states lose some power and revenue so wont happen. Keep in mind there are Qld'ers using SA roads as well...so long as they pay somewhere, though admittedly I think Qld is one of the dearer places now so it encourages people to leave them in other states when they see the prices. |

I live in nsw but all of our cars are rego'd in qld. They just want to you to have a qld residence/ address and a qld licence which I have. I have been in nsw for 3yrs now and been pulled over without issue, but I am located very close to the qld/nsw boarder and most people where I am have qld rego on there vehicles

I moved from A.C.T to batemans bay NSW years ago but kept a.c.t rego as they allowed a rego period of 3, 6 or 12mths. The 3 month period was nice and cheap. I regularly drove to a.c.t anyhow so i was able to pay it and get new sticker while i was there. Ignoring the fact they post renewals out to old address as long as i paid on time they didn't question it. I did switch to a NSW drivers licence though. Lets face it, now that some states don't require a rego sticker you can simply pay online and thats it...you could be ANYWHERE! As far as i know you can "holiday" in another state with other states rego for about 3 months, after which time police may well question your motives if you get stopped

Not to mention the GST thats contributed by that person for everyday or weekly purchases. The worlds not perfect & we all have our problems. My neighbors cat uses my yard as a gateway to the neighborhood. I chase it off with the hose when i catch it in action. You got any better ideas?

If you're in the Defence Force, you can change over when your rego expires. Fed law trumps state!

Im in SA, One of my cars has Vic rego, I have a Vic license and address. The Vic registered car was a private import and I had to jump through hoops to get registered, paid my Stamp duty and taxes again when I registered it in Vic and will have to pay stamp duty and taxes again when I change registration to SA, after probably jumping through hoops again. Im in no rush to flush that money and effort down the toilet for what? to make some bureaucrat sleep well at night.

You dont pay stamp duty to transfer rego between states, only when doing the initial rego when purchased.

Maybe the person who drives the car, lives x amount of days in S.A and X amount of days in QLD.
Maybe Rego is cheaper in SA than QLD. Could be a million reasons. |

The OP is talking about going the other way, cancel SA and register in Qld so there is only a number plate issue fee of $25ish. (So long as the vehicle stays in the same name) He will also need a safety certificate. Which may be hard to get by his description. This is probably why he keeps it SA rego.
He then applies to SA transport and cancels his SA rego by using the receipt for the SA number plates he got from QT and gets a refund, less any fees etc they have naturally. |

As for seeing it round....They might be fruit/vegie pickers....Common practice for them to buy a car interstate and travel round the country side picking and leaving the rego as is.....They only have to use a caravan park address with the locals to get away with leaving the rego as is. IMA, they generally stay in one state for 6 months before moving on.

However I really was responding to Mr Mashed again as he declared it wasnt the case, stamp duty on registration transfer, and I wanted to clear the air about what I understood based on what the government states on their website... JP |

The neighbour's 2 vehicles are registered in VIC and have had VIC plates on for over 3 years! I think they are tightwads and don't want to spend for a rego transfer and e-safety check here in NSW.

Please explain this then Ok no need now I just found the exclusion
From: http://www.revenuesa.sa.gov.au/stamp...inecalculators 'Stamp duty is payable on an Application to Register a new motor vehicle or an Application to Transfer the Registration of a second hand motor vehicle within 14 days of purchase and is payable by the person or firm applying to have the vehicle registered or transferred into their name.' Ahh I just found deep in their exclusions a one liner exempting me from paying I apologise to those I doubted based on my then current research. I wonder If I can get back my stamp duty paid on another car I transfered over over 10 years ago Yes in my experience I will be dragged through regency which still may not be worth it. Ignore me JP |

There you go then, At least the issue of stamp duty has been cleared up for at least 1 member. In doing so I have leant a couple of things too.Mainly my sarcasm needs some work. The post was actually in jest, having a little bit of dig at someone that reckons us Queenslanders will whinge about just about anything (speed cameras for one).
As long as this joker in the celica is insured if he runs into someone I really don't have an issue with how they run their life. |

Q. I have moved to Victoria from interstate and I want to transfer the registration of my car to Victorian. What do I need to do?
A. It is an offence if you are a permanent resident of Victoria and you do not transfer the vehicle registration to Victorian. You must change the registration of your vehicle to Victorian immediately once you are a permanent resident of Victoria. http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/...sAndFAQs/FAQs/

2ndly...The stamp duty....The best site to find this information is www.whitepages.com.au From there, people have to physcially have to remove themselves from the computer and speak to someone to find out about it. The site to find a picture of what a phone looks like is www.google.com Or actually physcially drive to the rego office and ask... Of course plenty will come on here and post up 60 million website links trying to disprove what I have written, but that doesn't bother me....It's not my hip pocket getting raped....I know I have never paid stamp duty when I have bought an unregistered car and put it on historic rego, so that's all that matters....

The stamp duty thing has only been resolved as far as people that believe in what is posted on the interweb site for that gov't department.....Unfortunately, I can't think of any gov't website that would advertise how to save a buck.....Can you?

I didn't realise there was different levels of fees charged for the same service. Does the person behind the counter like you and give you their special of the month or something! You want to register a car in X state, you decide what classification you wish to register it under and you present your paperwork and car. The fee isn't going to vary unless you have misrepresented it in some way. If you cannot interpret a transport dept PDF file that is CURRENT that is your problem. I have a house in SA and one in VIC.
I live half the year in each. Told that to a cop and he had no reply. Told Vicroads the same and a SA licence is fine to register a vic rego'ed car. Very difficult to enforce. |

The stamp duty part I am on about only reflects when you're registering/transferring a car on historic rego, which I stated previously. Historic vehicle rego is a little different, so if you want more info on that, glad to elaborate.... Might be a case of the person behind the counter likes me, but when you have 2 different offices, 2 different people lodging and 3 different people accepting in 3 different years, that might cancel that theory of yours out. The phone is good source of information.....What you do is take note of peoples names. That way, if the information differs phone to office, you have a name to work with...Only pitfall, is actually walking into the same office and for some, actually walking in there.... Finally the transport PDF you mention.....Goes back to the interweb....Historic rego paper work actually has to be physcially obtained, physcially sited and stamped by the transport dept, so it's a case of actually physcially getting off peoples bums and actually doing it....Unusual in this day and age, I know.... It is not obtainable off the interweb... Need to know more? I currently have 4 cars on historic rego and have been dealing with historic rego for the past 8 years
