Thanks, I did find that.

I'm looking for a list going back to 1986? or so when it moved from Van Wheels to Van Wheel Street Machine and then to just Street Machine.

The September 2013 issue was called their 300th issue, but I can't find a list of the now 302 issues.

I've got Street Machines going right back to the first issue of "Van Wheels", and then the first issue of "Van Wheels & Street Machines" (with SM in small letters), and then "Street Machine & Van Wheels", then the first issue where it just says "Street Machine".

Not to mention the old days where they didn't mind putting nude women in with the feature cars...

I stopped subscribing and just started buying the odd one that interested me from newsagents when they went a little stupid and started featuring car after car that was "Australias fastest street car!!!!", which were nothing but a series of full chassised ladder-barred wheel tubbed things with skinny little front runners...basically just drag cars with licence plates screwed on and a blower and carbs higher than the roof which was supposedly "street driven", when in reality you wouldn't get out of your driveway before The Plod descended and defected you into oblivion. Gave a lot of younger guys the wrong idea about what you could actually do to your street car before attracting too much of the wrong sort of attention...

They were indeed interesting show cars and engineering exercises...but "regularly street driven cars"...? Come on...

no different to forums and facebook these days, there are many people trying to pass off their cars as roadcars, but yes I agree with you, I have heard way toooo many times "but so and so in the magazine drives it on the street"

Exactly...without going to the shed and digging through the old magazines in their boxes, I believe the rot started to set in with a little LJ Torana on the cover...once again, "Australias quickest road registered/street driven car" or something...and it had a stripped out alloy interior, skinny little front runners, massive rear wheels in tubs, a full chassis, and a big block Chev with a stupendous supercharger as high as the roof. It had licence plates on it, sure...but that thing was quite blatantly a drag car with wipers, and would have never seen road bitumen under it's wheels. I've seen cars at the dragstrip being unloaded off trailers that were less wild than that thing was. Obviously they had a "friendly" mechanic to do the yearly roadworthy inspections (it was either VIC or NSW from memory). I often used to wonder how many mechanics had their affairs looked into because cars like that were featured proudly and proclaimed to be "road registered"...

It was even worse for some Queensland cars...technically, in QLD where we don't have yearly roadworthies, you could modify some street car, even a brand new model, into a full on drag car and just keep paying your rego...bingo, you have "the fastest street registered car"...it's just you could never drive it, but it would be "registered"...
