Don't know if this will help or not, but I hope it might.
Whenever I have trouble getting a good paint finish I usually find its because I've shortcut one of the three "P"s

PREPARATION, PREPARATION, and PATIENCE

I think it might help if you adjust your gun right back so that there's a lot less material coming through, and try to do more of, but thinner coats to get the coverage you need, and with each coat, try to paint the side walls of the spokes first, then do a light coat on the faces, just as you always paint a wheel arch BEFORE you paint the guard, you get less runs that way.

Taken to extreme, you might be better doing the intricate bits with an airbrush.

It might also help to put each wheel on the front of a car so you can turn it as you go.
