... facebook,....
From day 1 it was a ticking time bomb for bullying, stalking and a predator playground, not to mention identity theft. I've never been anywhere near it and never would, and I'll do my damnedest to stop my kids from ever getting on there as well.

I could write a book on dramas in my life previously associated with Facebook. Putting it on ignore and getting off it was the best thing I ever did. There is a Jekyll and Hyde in a lot of the population and that place brings it out....

Biggest mistake people make IMO is not understanding and setting their privacy correctly.

I use Facebook all the time, never have any dramas on it because I have my security settings on the highest and here's the best bit. I only add people I know on there. It's amazing how many people have hundreds or even thousands of friends, no one knows that many people...!

Even with your security settings on the highest, beware of "liking" pages and commenting on their status.
I did that with the AMWU and got cached by Google, even though my privacy settings keep me from my profile appearing on Google I still appear on the AMWU's page with my comment, from 2011. |

Facebook should not be the real world.
AFD at Deakin Uni should be.

A while ago I set up a false identity there, but have never used it.
But every 2 days I get a 'you have notifications pending' (usually a friend request). Or 'do you know John citizen and 6 others?' from Facebook.

Yeah, my entire extended family broke up over it. One aunt who bitches about everyone behind their back got on there. She was the classic keyboard warrior on Facebook but sweet as pie to your face. Everyone from my immediate family got sick of the snide comments and stalking so dropped her from Facebook. It all got worse front there, total family break down to the point where my father got cancer last year and not one of them called or visited him in hospital. If not for Facebook the family would still be talking, albeit with that aunt backstabbing and talking about everyone behind their backs. I haven't talked to my family in about a decade. So no real loss to me. Feel sorry for my father though...

I like it for it's ease of organising events with friends. But i hate the misrepresentations. Why do people need to try and big note themselves and make out they are having a wonderful life. At the expense of others.
I'm off it at the moment. Not sure if i'll go back.

Misses account got hacked by ex and friends in IT.
Complained to Facebook Did nothing. Refuse to use it or twitter....seriously, what a load of **** both are. Lol at ' I have my security settings' Hackers can get in in 2 mins and change your comments if they wanted too. Secure?.....most certainly not Use Skype to catch up with family, then u can look at them and talk.

I use twitter, but not to post - the emergency services updates (eg CFA) on there are far more timely than what is on radio or other forms of comms. Also good for metro, vic pol, vic roads etc.

Never had an account - never will.
I saw the huge amount of time wasted by other people. And I'm totally disappointed that the older kids and wife have made accounts (though my request for not using my Surname carried through) I also get quite mad when I find out photos of my youngest have been placed there. He has no say in this and when he is older he may not like his pics being out there like that (likeI am against it) There are other ways to share photos, nothing wrong with email. |

You know... I find it interesting people blame the medium and not the people using it for the dramas...
If you know how to use social media (this is social media right here btw, just an older form of it), and know how to set up your passwords properly (ie: Don't have the same one for EVERYTHING), and know how to keep your computer secure (so you don't mistakingly download a keylogger - one of the easiest ways to steal passwords), you're pretty set. I've only known two people who got hacked (it was their own damn fault), and the difference between discussing something on facebook and in person, is that other people (depending on where the discussion takes place), can get involved. Again, that's the user. Not the media format.

I know too many who log on under their own NAME, but are far far from themselves on it. They paint a picture of their lives, not the reality. They create a meme of themselves, which is far from who they are. They use it as a weapon to sway opinion for self reinforcement. For sympathy in those 'look at me moments'. They revel in the passive aggressive post. They post stories about their lives in ways which only generate the 'yes' vote from the 'cyber' community, it avoids having to face the reality of real opinion of those that know them and maybe, just maybe, find they are wrong. And if it's used against another, there is little comeback for that party against the army of cyber 'friend's that have no idea about anything in reality and yet form and indirectly steer lives and relationships they know nothing about.
But yes, it is the people, not the platform. But it is sadly a platform which shows up the worst in many. And I know others who use forum posts like this as a 'release' Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I had one lol I hated it and deleted it along with the friends with it.
I had a **** bunch of friends who would just casually marginalize me from going out all the time and they'd post the photo's up and enjoy my reactions, it's a breeding ground for narcissism. I think it promotes disgusting behavior.

I have it, I look at it when I'm bored, but only post a few times a year.
Never had a problem. I only friend people I know and don't blabber on about crap. It's very, very rare that I see all the drama that some people see daily on Facebook. |

Love it... great when I was travelling to keep track of who's doing what. Great for arranging events, great for finding old friends, family you didn't know existed.
Great for enforcing that 'it's over' with an ex... First, you put this up, and add a comment about how I should have heeded the 'research': Followed by this the first weekend: Now, that's a very happy and newly single man if ever I saw one! Yeah, childish I know... meh, I have a degree in childish....
