MAVERICK Queensland MP and businessman Clive Palmer believes Holden, Ford and Toyota should all build cars at the same location in South Australia to try and cut costs and make the industry more competitive.
Mr Palmer was in Adelaide on Saturday to launch the state election campaign for the Palmer United Party and said it was “a national disgrace’’ that the car industry was being allowed to die. He advocated more government funding to try and save the industry. “It might be bringing the three auto companies together and making South Australia the hub of vehicle production, not for 90,000 vehicles but for 222,000,’’ the member for the federal seat of Fairfax said. He said demand for Australian cars could be increased by mandating all state and federal governments buy local cars which would be made in “one super factory here in South Australia’’. In other policy announcements, Mr Palmer said more needed to be done to make farming more economically viable and advocated more should be done to increase the value of minerals mined in the state. http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/n...-1226842203007

Somehow I don't see Mr. Palmer rushing forth with his own billions to do it...
Nor would Ford, GM and Toyota want the complication of three plants in one, there's a lot of logistics and confidentiality regarding intellectual property preventing it ever happening |

It never ceases to amaze me how stupid people in "power" can be. Why would they work together in some super factory? it's exactly the same as asking coke and pepsi to join together. The only thing I can possible agree with is the state and federal government buying locally made cars. Infact I would have to go further to say that any government or government funded organisation are to buy locally made cars. It honestly annoys me a little to see the local council car park full of Subaru outbacks and not one locally made car.

No benefit unless they share a platform. Developing said platform for our market? Pffft, forget it, no chance of a meaningful return.

I think the SA or VIC people should bid on the right to buy either Ford or Holden factories and build the 'Homer' federally funding for the winners, the design is already there and Im sure it appeals to the average joe.
Imagine a council carpark of 'Homers' https://www.google.com.au/search?q=t...icial&tbm=isch JP |

Clive is a character but his heart is in the right place. What people dont understand is that the car industry, globally, is one of the biggest businesses by far. If you look up our trade stats the 3rd biggest area of imports is cars!
If we dont make cars anymore then we should tax them more. We dont need to send Aussie dollars overseas. Id slowly phase in a 20-25% GST on cars. Unemployment is rising :^( The GFC is catching up with us I fear. |

Clive is doing exactly what Clive always does, he gets people talking about HIS simple solutions to everything, he knows full well that it doesn't, wouldn't, will never work.
But at least you are are talking about Clive. So he gets what the wants.

How would that idea help anything? Apart of course from make the government richer, and cars for the public way more expensive. Why would we impose a higher GST on something we don't make anymore? "We don't need to send Aussie dollars overseas"...?? What? If you don't have a choice where the car you are buying is made...ie: all from overseas...then how exactly would that help? People will still need new cars, so why punish them because they're all foreign made? In fact, protectionist tariffs and taxes should be dropped completely on all cars after local manufacture stops, as we don't need to "protect" something that won't be happening any more. |

Maybe : In one factory : Toyota build Corolla..Holden build Cruze and Ford build Falcon.

The esteemed Mr. Palmer... we could ask the ex staff at his resort at Coolum if they may be willing to build them (maybe he could bring back the Titanic 2 from China, and build it there as well).... perhaps he should just have a Bex and a bit of a lay down...

WA members had no say in the Senate representatives and Chamonix Terblanche who was their original No2 on the ticket was removed and only given 3rd spot once she jumped on the plane and confronted Clive and she had the most backing from the party members. The number one spot on the ticket in WA is Dio Wang and his day job ......... executive at Mineralology, a Clive Palmer company. AMEP did a deal with the devil when they signed the Memorandum of Understanding with Palmer and I hope it doesn't end up biting AMEP on the butt. |

We used to build multiple cars at the same facility a long time ago. Does anyone remember AMI - Australian Motor Industries I think it was called. There were Toyotas and Ramblers and possibly other makes built by AMI.
Some of these cars from the 60's and early 70's had a badge on the fender AMI |
