I'm no expert, but have you tried right clicking at the top of the screen next to the tabs and deselecting the ask tool bar?

Install Avast anti virus .. the free version. When you have got it installed it has an option to remove unwanted toolbars. Works well for me.

I know how you feel . . those frikkin popup ads drive you crazy. They seem to come from everywhere . . I've got rid of them now though.

SuperAntiSpyware also is good to have as mentioned by Gasolane.

Here is the link direct from Ask themselves.
http://help.ask.com/link/portal/3001...sk-com-Toolbar
It's actually pretty simple, have done it a few times for others.

I also suggest you get Crap Cleaner from here:-
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download?upgrade
Click on the Piriform link at the bottom of the free version option.
This allows you to easily delete installed progs and control what starts on your computer when it starts.
Of course it also cleans out most of the crap that builds up over time.
It's always the second thing - after security/anti-virus software - i install for anybodys system, the most useful program ever IMHO.

Cheers,

^^ ditto - I have just switched from AVG free to avast free with the new laptop - avast seems to be the better performer - laptop runs a bit quicker and scans a bit quicker and as said had the added bonus of the browser cleaner which is very handy - I scoped out all the reviews prior to picking and it seems that the freebies still let a few through which is why you have to clean quite often compared to something like kaspersky which was at the pointy end - avast was rated best of the freebies

Also when you do Java updates, watch out for the checkbox for Ask (by default it's switched on!), as these days they've bundled this bloatware with the humble Java updates.

yeah it is a pain.
I made a desktop short cut http://www.google.com/webhp?nord=1
This makes goggle go to http and not https but it also stops the ask toolbar starting as the search page

Cheers,
Spent a couple hours cleaning up with CCcleaner now most websites are just plagued with problems and crash on the regular. Is that normal?

No, not normal.
If you have been playing with what programs startup when the PC starts, you may have gone too far.
Some things definitely need to start.
If you have deleted some of the wrong things, you may need to use system restore to get it back to normal.
Then re-use Crap Cleaner, but take it step by step and test it as you go.
If you have just turned things off - greyed them out - you can reactivate them easily, re-start and try again.
For instance my startup looks like this (attached)

Hope this helps - generally speaking Crap Cleaner is extremely reliable and not all that agressive, as many other ones are, so usually no issues arise.

Cheers,

Your probably right, I needed a format anyway. Websites still work you just have to refresh a few times to get any of the links to work.

Oh well live and learn lol, cheers anyway.

In windows 7, explorer 11, go to tools, (the small cog in the top RH corner), manage add-ons, find ask.com and disable nero tool bars, then go to tools again, then internet options, general, and select home page of your choice

If anyone doesn't have the usual Anti spyware or Anti Malware tools on their PC, simply Google "ask toolbar removal" and pick from the hundreds of answers there.
