Smile HOT lanes - where motorists pay more to drive faster - could become part of Brisbane’s road network

"HOT lanes - where motorists pay more to drive faster - could become part of Brisbane’s road network following the sale of Queensland Motorways to a forward-thinking private consortium.

One of the new owners Transurban pioneered the high occupancy toll lane concept for its United States’ interests and has not ruled out adopting the same approach in southeast Queensland, if it could enhance the performance of the road network.

The company will take over toll operations for the Gateway Bridges, the Logan Motorway, the Clem7 Tunnel and the Go Between Bridge from late June and Legacy Way when it opens next year.

Along with consortium partners AustralianSuper and the Abu Dhabi-based Tawreed, Transurban paid $6.7 billion for the toll roads, plus $384 million in stamp duty."

Privatized roads are a terrible idea because there can't be any competition. If you don't like the price on a tollway to get from point A to point B, it's not like you can choose one of many others instead. Just build the roads we need to make it safe for 160km/h and let it be free.

So speed doesn't kill if you pay a premium to do it, bit like how it works now... I speed and I pay a premium if I get caught.

Just like paying private rent for a road in addition to the public tax we already pay.
What is going on in this world?

it's called creating a story out of nothing

notice the use of the word 'could' in the story?

it's not even worth discussing this bit of dribble masquerading as a news article

Not quite sure how they'd police the idiots that sit in the lane doin 40. As it is now the law says keep left unless over taking but people seem to need to fill the empty lane and drive in a row.

I agree with what SensationFG8 says.

We would be better off if they targeted those useless drivers who insist on staying at the speed limit while sitting in the right lane choking up the highways and freeways.

They have that already. Pay too much to go through the Clem 7 tunnel and you get to drive at 80 instead of 60 km/hour. Like putting lipstick on a pig.

Theyll put the speed limit down 20 kmh for normal toll drivers from the speed it is nowand let people who pay more drive at the current limit! That's what I would suspect! No high speed driving im afraid. ..

Sounds more like transit lanes where you pay extra to jump ahead rather than actually drive at a higher speed. Well I suppose if the 'normal' lanes are congested than anything is 'faster' really and doesn't necessarily mean the speed limit needs to be raised just because there is a toll.

Was coming home from Brisbane tonight and drove past one of the openings for the tollway that goes from Kedron area to Nundah - the sign said the time of the trip was 3 mins and the cost was $3.80. Now that's what I call a rip off!

So essentially you're just paying to get to the next traffic jam/bottleneck a couple minutes earlier! Because that's all Brisbane is full of

Motorists already pay more to go fast, just look at all the speed cameras in the Clem 7 and Airport Link.
It's the same old melarky dressed up differently and this new toll road owner will go bust too.

People will not pay tolls to travel on roads where chances are good that their license and livelihood is imperiled.
