2015 Ford Edge Gets Better Looks and More Tech for its Journey Around the World

Here we have the 2015 Ford Edge – a crossover which first appeared in 2006 to challenge the Nissan Murano. This second generation is based on the Ford Global Midsize Platform – which underpins the Fusion/Mondeo. Its exterior borrows heavily from the recent Ford Edge Concept, while the interior is close to current corporate cabins.

However, the big story is the addition of new technologies, in particular ones that enhance safety and comfort. Available driver-assist technologies include adaptive steering system; enhanced active park assist; adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support; 180-degree front camera with washer; glove box-mounted airbag system; inflatable rear safety belts; and a hands-free liftgate.

The model will be available in four trims: SE, SEL, Sport, and Titanium. Three engines will be available worldwide. a standard twin-scroll 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder offering an estimated 245 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque and a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 estimated to have more than 300 horsepower. A normally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 engine will also be offered with an unspecified amount of power. All will be equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Both front- and all-wheel drive models have been engineered for greater comfort.

There is a redesigned suspension – front and rear – developed to isolate road imperfection and absorb noise. Ford used more high-strength steel in the body, resulting in up to a 26 percent increase in stiffness. The Edge has adaptive electric steering which Ford claims makes the vehicle more maneuverable and dynamic, but also has an efficiency advantage, and facilitates the self-parking function.

All of these new features will be assets as Ford pitches the Edge to a new, global audience. The vehicle launches in the U.S. in early 2015, followed by launches in South America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific. It will be the first Edge available in Western Europe in a ringing endorsement of the company’s successful One Ford Strategy pioneered by outgoing Ford CEO Alan Mulally.

Looks good, seems like they've finally realized how terrible the kinetic interior is (as in EcoSport).

That whole tail light assembly looks like it will date fairly quickly though...

Surely that isnt the territory replacement? I mean it looks high spec and stuff but it isn't even in the same league as a terry. It looks like an over sized hatch back. And its so cramped inside. We definitely will not be updated our terry to one of those. It actually reminds me of those little Kia SUVs that they advertise all the time.

Don't like the front, it is so ugly, oversized grille looks out of place.
The interior looks ok, the steering wheel looks like something from the 90's and the infotainment center, well...enough with the Sony rubbish.

I reckon looks good in the pics, pretty thought. Really like the interior in the real life pics, although I hate all these new cars that put the front air vents in those positions. Never really hits ur face, goes straight towards the steering wheel and left hand when driving. We have the current focus which had them like that and was pathetic over summer. I'll never buy a car again with vents like that, hence why I can back to falcon and next car will be a mondeo

Looks like an oversized hatch with no ground clearance. Back end roof line and glass also looks like a hatch. Would be interested to see boot/cargo space.

In general looks like it's a lot smaller compared to Territory.

I dont like the new theme for their utility cars, this, Everest and now looks like the Ranger are going that way.

Small cars seems to have a "squinty" version that just looks better. I think the new Kluger pulls that style off better.

Yeah think they're making a dangerous decision here, unless the Everest is going to deliver a better family ride than expected (which seems hard to comprehend given a lot of the utility come suv vehicles are fairly rugged).

A Territory replacement it is not if it does not have a 7 seat option.

That is what I am keen to know, the cargo/boot area space.

This is a nice looking automobile, i can see why it is being touted as the Territory replacement as its a "mid" SUV with a uni-body construction, compared to the Everest that is body on frame. But given that the Ranger already feels quite nice to drive and sit in, it can match the territory here...

However, I think Ford are missing out on a masterstroke of marketing if the Territory name is not used for either, in fact, the Everest should be the Territory, and the Edge simply the "Territory Edge".

This was supposed to share it's floor with the next Galaxy last I heard, which is basically an MPV Mondeo, so 7 seats isn't impossible.

I think it does look good though. For the people making comments about it looking like a large hatchback, that's all these cars are anyway.

No, the Territory badge should be retired with honour along with the Falcon's.

Edge was always going to fill the gap left by Territory, but Ford are really splitting the segment. If 5 seats are enough and your want something a bit sporty and stylish then go the Edge. But if you really need the 7 seats and/or want to tow a caravan around the country and/or want/need something a bit more rugged go the Everest.

It's hard to tell by the pics but you'd have to assume it's bigger than the Kuga, which really should be called the Escape.

Agree, Ford should retire the Territory badge.

The aim of the game here is providing a bit of product diversity in Ford's SUV lineup instead of having just one or two models.

I think the everest will be damn nice to drive. Ranger with IFS and leafs is nice to drive, what will IFS + coil be like! has to be better.

It looks pretty good inside and out to me.
But like others have said, needs to be a 7 seat option in order to replace the Territory.

If they were to split the segment with the 5 seater Edge and 7 seater Everest, they would be splitting a segment that they created/championed and allowing others (Kluger, santa fe, pathfinder, etc) to eat up market share.

I hope they keep the Territory name, it took ages for the market to gain traction when ford stopped the Laser name for Focus (i know it was better for the long run, but man it took ages).

I guess they have to strategically think about it. Do they have enough resources/budget to create enough brand awareness for a new name like Edge.

On looking at recent campaigns, its probably better to stick with Territory. The existing Territory is a good product and the brand awareness is already top of mind with Australians.

Nah Falcon and Territory should be laid to rest. Much like what they did with Fairmont et al.

There are many familes out there who get Territories and Klugers because the Prado/Everest type is just overkill. Not to mention more expensive because they are more capable off roaders.

Renaming Escape Kuga is proof they are okay with changing vehicle names.
