"Ford has given a glimpse of its family-sized SUV for the future, taking the covers off the new Ford Explorer that will ultimately replace the locally-made Ford Territory once production at Broadmeadows ends in 2016.
Ford unveiled the facelifted version of the 2011 Explorer at the Los Angeles motor show today and it is believed to be a pointer as to how the next generation model due in two years will look. Ford Australia has not yet confirmed that the US-built Explorer will replace the Territory SUV but well placed insiders say it is a done deal. CarsGuide understands Ford also considered using the Territory name on the next generation Explorer because it is so popular with Australian buyers. But in the end the decision was made to go with the global Explorer name, although the Territory badge may live on as one of the model grades. The facelifted version of the 2011 Ford Explorer, which arriives just past the midway point of the model’s lifecycle, has adopted a more upmarket appearance with hints of Range Rover in the grille and headlights. The interior has been upgraded with more luxury equipment and appearance. The current Ford Explorer already shares a lot in common with the Ford Territory: both share their underpinnings with large sedans (the US Taurus for the Explorer and the Australian Falcon for the Territory), are available with five or seven seats, and are car-like to drive. Ford insiders are adamant that the recently released Ford Everest, based on heavy duty Ranger ute underpinnings, is not the replacement for the Territory, and nor is the other global Ford SUV planned for Australia, the Edge, which is a five-seater only. Ford sold 17,291 Explorers across two generations in Australia from 1996 to 2005. But the US model was dropped after sales of the locally-made Territory quickly outsold it." http://www.carsguide.com.au/car-news...erritory-30223

Awesome, but I would take the Everest. Though Explorer is nice too. I was surprised they are not offering the 2.7 EcoBoost as an option.

This is Great news, as I've always thought Explorer was the best replacement for the Tezza,
And just in case anybody misses it in the article: Ford insiders are adamant that the recently released Ford Everest, based on heavy duty Ranger ute underpinnings, is not the replacement for the Territory, and nor is the other global Ford SUV planned for Australia, the Edge, which is a five-seater only. and it does look very Range Roveresk , which IMO is a good thing

Well, it looks much nicer than the current one. The rest of Dowlstick's claims are just assumptions though

New Edge gets revealed, that's claimed by the media to be the Territory replacement.
New Explorer gets revealed, and then that's claimed to be the Territory replacement. Which is it?? |

I don't like the silver grille, and the headlights look a bit too similar to a Grand Cherokee

Is this the same model we are looking at ? if it is, it looks a bit of alright Edit: just a bit busy around the lower grille area for my taste, but the rest is cool.

Ford have now released pics of a 7 seat Edge...for China, but they're mum on whether this will come to the Oz market.

Stylish with 7 seats and rides like a car. Seem the obvious choice for the replacement. I like it.

better looking than the current at front.
When in the US I saw these things everywhere and the rear of them looked really good and upmarket, just that front was too busy. Barring the grille, it looks a treat.

I know seems strange without an 8 in the line-up for the Americans. but they would have to fit it in sideways..
its transverse

The Territory is a crossover. The whole idea of it is for people who don't want a 4WD/offroader. A lot of people still don't get that.
In at the dealer today. The sales bloke said the Edge was the replacement for the Territory, that's what they'd been told by Ford. Then he rolled his eyes and said it was front wheel drive. Call me prejudiced but our Ford journey will be coming to an end when we've exhausted the Territorys. It's beyond imagination that the Americans could produce anything as good as the Territory (or the Falcon for that matter). Ford USA is pushing these vehicles onto us as solace, thinking Aussies are just like Americans. But they've got it wrong. I wouldn't touch a US vehicle with a long pole. They have such reputational damage that it would take a lifetime of actually proving they could produce well-designed and made cars to ever bring me over. I'm not deceived by shiny metal! We'll be looking elsewhere, though I don't think any other manufacturer quite replicates Territory's class act in every detail. Perhaps the other rear-wheelers BMW and Merc, but some little details mess it up - including the price! |

You'd have to look at something like an X5 to get a similar driving experience. And they ain't exactly cheap.
