Default Who said W.A is behind the times?

Sorry if it has been up before, but this is what we have been saying all along. Booking people for inattentiveness, and not just a couple kays over.

More people die on the roads in this country per year from idiots texting while driving than great white sharks, jelly fish, blue-ringed octopus, stone-fish, puffer fish, crocs, all spiders and all snakes combined. Now that's something you wont hear on X-factor.

This is a minority case surely? Everyone one I know who has received a ticket well and truly deserved it by being more than 'just a couple kays over'...

Police everywhere are probably using their better judgment already, hence the underwhelming amount of tickets issued for being just over the limit...

Yeah mate, I agree I have never been booked for just a couple over. But inattention is the main reason for accidents on our roads not speeding.

That lady in the silver Territory at the end of that clip is a prime example. She had no idea what was going on around her.

If the new initiative is going to make the road's safer in WA, i say go for it. Something similar here in NSW would be good!

Just as a matter of interest, 1300 mobile phone Infringements, how much is that worth in dollars? ??
OK answered my own question with a bit of a Google, at 400 bucks and 3 demerit points for using a hand held mobile.......... it comes to $ 520,000

$400 fine in Victoria I think, not sure about W.A. So almost half a mil. Guess that covers the costs of the new fleet of bikes.

next will be a fine for "intent" to speed using precognition, if your doin 104 in a 100 zone and a camera could pick up on motion rather then a photo, the speed increasing could be calculated to a possiable outcome of future speed onces past the camera

I wish they would just post an observer in contact with the bike cops at the train station s from the lines that run down the centre of the Kwinana freeway. While waiting to catch the train early in the morning from the elevated platform (Murdoch) I see about 1 in 10 drivers texting or talking on mobile phone while sitting at 100 km/hr plus in the right hand lane. Mostly YLs but also a few tradies and scaringly many truckies. These are obviously more dangerous than those stopped at lights and I fear that video is going to move the problem from the cars queuing at lights to those in motion at speed.

Since riding a motorbike i have seen quite a few people driving while on the phone including one bloke towing a trailer on Bunbury bypass doing around 125kmh talking on the phone.
I think this is a good thing to do to save lives, and i think the people who have a problem with it are the ones who like to use there phones while behind the wheel.

I think it's a good thing too, but lets look at those actually using a phone whilst driving.
Everyone in that video is stationary at a set of lights. If the vehicle isn't moving then it doesn't pose a danger to other road users.
If they continue to use the phone once on the move, then ping 'em.
But doing that whilst stationary is like shooting fish in a barrel.

I'm all for this new fleet of unmarked police bikes. The more they catch, the better.
Maybe I'm getting old and intolerable, but the culture (if that's what you call it?) on Perth roads has deteriorated significantly in recent years. Especially with the younger drivers. So more impatience, aggression and selfishness.

Younger generation and even mine would be a huge culprit with twitter, facebook, tumblr you name it. They'll be on their phones either texting or using that, its funny I rarely see young people actually talking on their phones but heads buried in it probably updating their facebook status "suck in traffic fml".

I don't understand people who use loudspeaker on their phone trying not to get caught either, I mean **** regardless if the phone is next to your ear or your holding it to your mouth someone will notice. I say raise the fine for being on your phone and who cares if its revenue raising I've almost been hit countless times for it due to people lane drifting...

Yep, it is straight out against the law. My phone is my wallet so that can be a problem.

imo, if they got back to fining drivers for the basics like not keeping left, not using an indicator, not merging properly etc it would curtail a lot of the other bad behavior on the road. would probably raise a lot more than speeding alone.

The best part about the Xmas break infringements is its double demerits over here so all those busted with a phone in hand end up with six demerit points!

That dude is so cool and the buggers got eyes like a hawk.

Great to see as I've lost count of how many times I've nearly been sideswiped by young girls drifting across while on their phones. Give the horn a short warning blast and they then panic and come close to causing a pile up.

These Police should also be issued with a small hammer and be able to smash the phones there and then.

Really ****** me off and there's no excuse.

No; they should deliver them to me so I can jump up and down on them (rear ended 9 times now by mobile phone users while stopped at red lights). Seriously I think they should be crushed on the spot (using a mobile while moving is much worse than hooning I think). Perhaps they should be issued with a little hydraulic crushing device similar to a can crusher or oil filter crusher.

That is a massive number of times to be rear ended. I clock about 40,000km's a year and am yet to be involved in a single prang. Do you have really good brakes?

I have always been stationery for some moments and generally been in a queue of stopped cars (mostly red lights - once at a stop sign).

It has been in different cars over a 20 year period. Several were where the car behind me got hit and was pushed into my rear end. I used to drive a lot (daily) around Perth CBD and quiet a few happened their (more lights, more mobile phone users and an area of early adopters of mobile phones.). I also think the CBD means that the slow stop start traffic lures users into thinking they can drive slowly and use their phone at the same time. It also seems to have a lot of salesmen and the like driving around while talking to clients on their mobiles and looking for a parking space at the same time.

Most recent was in the suburbs (near Garden City) my new FG ute where another new FG sedan behind me in the queue of cars stopped at the lights was hit by a mobile using Merc driver. Time before I was in the NC Fairlane the 3rd car hit in a queue of cars stopped at the lights on South street O'Connor. The first time was circa 1994 corner of Plain St and Riverside drive Perth City; again stopped at the lights in my LC Lancer. One in the Fairlane was Christmas day stopped at lights turning from Forest Road on to the Freeway. Another stopped at the lights where the Freeway becomes Charles Street (LC Lancer). Another corner of Bennett and Hay Street stopped at the lights (LC Lancer) . Three of the 9 involved only minor damage. Another Corner of South Street and Murdoch Drive (LC Lancer). And yes all brake lights working (and eyelevel brake light fitted to LC Lancer) and I stand on the brakes while stopped. I have now bought a eyelevel flashing brake light to fit to the ute's sports bar and I now always leave a couple of metres space between me and the next stopped car in the queue so when the seemingly inevitable happens I can take some avoidance action or reduce the chance of being pushed into the car in front.
