help me get over my km phobia!!

Im about to buy a car... well I think I am..

Not looking to spend a great amount as I already have too many cars..

essentially I found a car im very interested in...

ticks all the boxes for me..

one owner
service books upto date
Fully optioned
price is what im willing to spend
its a ford
awd
immaculate condition

etc etc etc

but the one thing im a bit iffy on is the km....

it has 98,000km on the clock and its 9 years old.. its sort of the tipping point, a phychological point where the car is seen as past its best..

Or is it? The car is on the central coast so id imagine plenty of highway driving, its a one owner car fully serviced and maintained, its an elderly couple that own the car, always garaged and the price is very fair.

but its still on the cusp of 100,000km... its still with a bit of driving will hit north of 100,000km and start to need maintenance etc.. then when people ask how many km it has ill have to sheepishly concede.

Please someone help me look past my km phobia. Its a great car and I want to buy it. Just the km holding me back.

Not exactly....

New this car is about 5 times the asking price that I'm paying..

Despite the good price I'm unsure if I can shirk past the km on the clock..

But maybe some cars are built tougher than others.. 100,000km on an i6 might be like 50,000km on a 4cyl

My 10 yr old Territory has 248 thou kms. I've had it since new

I bought the 2004 RTV with 211 thou kms 3 or 4 years ago and have added another 20 or so since then.

Both still going strong

I never had a problem telling people my old diesel rodeo had 650 000ks on it, don't know why you would be embarrassed telling people your car had 100 000ks on it.

I'm a bit like you Hulktser (ahhh help me guys...), and always aim to buy the lowest mileage car available.
However, I'm getting more and more used to it.

The massively significant advantage to buying used cars with a few k's on board is the fantastic value.
You've worked this out anyhow, knowing that new it's worth 5 times the asking price of this second hand one.

100,000km isn't a lot at all if it's been maintained well, and it sounds like it has.

If it ticks all the right boxes, I would certainly go ahead with it, you'll have forgotten all about the k's in a few weeks.

The first 100k are the best, the new car feel, smell and tightness.

I don't get why some of you are so hostile and can't answer the question. If you have nothing nice to say that doesn't relate to the topic then don't post, it's as simple as that (seems a lot are jumping on the Hulk hate band-wagon just for the sake of it).

Anyways Hulk, if the cars been looked after and been serviced regularly it should be fine. If they're an elderly couple like you mentioned and the cars mainly been used for highway driving it wouldn't stop me from buying it.

Personally, when buying used I look for low km examples too but the km's don't tell the whole story. For example a car with 50,000km's could be treated terribly, never serviced etc. I'd say go for it if its what you want, just get it inspected thoroughly.

Some used to have that exact same concern when odometers recorded miles, so if your grand dad thought the same as you then go ahead and buy it - it's done 60000 less kms than the one he bought . . .

The old boys 2003 Mazda 323 is about 400,300km original engine, still has the original clutch too.

Its been abused its whole life, never serviced properly and it survived me learning to drive in it.

The only cars I wouldn't buy is one from a P plater regardless of km or from someone with one continuous eyebrow from Western Sydney.

i got a hand me down car off my dad a few years back due to him upgrading and didnt want to clutter up his garage, a 7 year old falcon, 240,000ks, still on 2nd set of tires, drove like it was brand new, towards the end i wore the 330,000+kms proudly and i regret moving it on..
So you've found a car you want, elderly owners, always serviced, garaged, price is right, 10,000km per year and probably never broken the speed limit, honestly, i think you'd be crazy to pass it up. In fact, whats their number, i might give them a call
